Introducing the vehicle as a “one-of-a-kind concept car” that may well be as revolutionary as the Beetle, Volkswagen has high hopes for their new zero-emissions vehicle.
The concept, based on VW’s new modular electrification kit (MEB), will likely be the size of a Golf hatchback on the outside yet have an interior as roomy as that of the Passat. With regards to its range, VW’s brand boss Herbert Diess said that the EV’s battery pack in production form will have enough energy for a range of around 400 to 600kms based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).
In an effort to keep prices affordable, VW will apply normal body construction for the production model that will make use of steel. Christian Senger, the vehicle’s project leader, says that the vehicle will not have “any radical body concepts” and will likely follow the design of current models in VW’s lineup.
Despite this new VW being dubbed a ‘concept’ for the upcoming Paris Motor Show, Diess previously stated that this new EV is already pretty close to production form and stands as a prototype.
The concept is set to make its transition into production by 2019 and will be the first to use the MEB in VW’s lineup. A second generation Phaeton, a small crossover, and a coupe will likely follow suit to make use of the MEB platform in the years following that.
