When it comes to crossovers, the Philippines is spoiled for choice. Whether it's a subcompact, compact, midsize, or full-size, there are plenty to choose from, along with a variety of brands.
But let's say you only have a budget of less than a million Pesos. Could you buy a brand new crossover with that kind of money?
Yes, you can.
Out of the countless crossovers available in the market today, we list down some of the most affordable models now on sale.
Chery Tiggo 2
Let's start with the most affordable today, the Chery Tiggo 2. It's the brand's entry-level model and starts at just PHP 695,000 for the base manual. At that price, some may be expecting the Tiggo 2 to be a bare-bones model. In reality, however, it comes with some pretty neat features.
It has a 2-DIN sound system, rear parking sensors, steering wheel audio controls, daytime running lights, anti-lock brakes, brake assist, traction/stability control, hill-start assist, and dual airbags. Opt for the automatic version (which sells for PHP 770,000), and you get extras like leather upholstery, touchscreen infotainment, automatic climate control, and a reverse camera.
Despite being one of the newest crossovers to make its way to the country, Kia's smallest offering comes out swinging. Available in three variants, the base model LX M/T starts at an affordable PHP 735,000. Meanwhile, the midrange LX A/T is selling for PHP 835,000. Last but not least is the top-spec EX A/T which retails for PHP 925,000.
All models of the Stonic come with a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a six-speaker sound system, and steering wheel controls. More importantly, all variants have safety features like anti-lock brakes, dual airbags, and a reverse camera.
Chery Tiggo 5X
If the Tiggo 2 is a bit too small to your liking, Chery also has the slightly bigger Tiggo 5X. It may have a boxier design, but don't let its shape fool you. It's spacious and also offers cargo room. Depending on the model you're getting, the Tiggo 5X can come with a fully-digital instrument panel, leather upholstery, power moonroof, automatic climate control, and Apple CarPlay too.
The price range of the Tiggo 5X starts at PHP 815,000 for the base manual. Next is the mid-range CVT is available at PHP 860,000. At the top of the range is the Luxury variant that sells for PHP 950,000.
It may be a few years old now, but the MG ZS still has a lot to offer. It combines sharp looks, an ergonomic and stylish interior, and a 1.5-liter powertrain. Whether you're picking up the entry-level Style, or the feature-packed Alpha, there is a ZS for everyone.
All models of the ZS come with dual front airbags, anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, electronic power steering, adjustable halogen headlights, and ISOFIX child seat mounting points. In terms of in-car amenities, a 2-DIN head unit is available while a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto comes standard on the Alpha variants. Leather seats, cruise control, automatic climate control, and rear parking sensors are also available. As for the range-topping model, it gets a power moonroof, side/curtain airbags, automatic climate control, heated side mirrors and a tire pressure monitoring system.
The range starts with the base 1.5 MT Style that retails for PHP 818,888. In the middle are the 1.5 AT Style and Style Plus that start at PHP 868,888 and PHP 898,888, respectively. At the top of the heap is the 1.5 AT Alpha which is selling for PHP 998,888.
Hyundai also wants a piece of the sub-PHP 1 million crossover pie. Their entry into this competitive and price-sensitive market is the all-new Venue. At PHP 915,000 to PHP 985,000, it's a little bit more expensive than its nearest competitors, but the Venue does have some aces up its sleeve. All variants come with a tilt/telescopic steering column, automatic climate control, steering wheel audio controls, 60:40 split rear seats, and Apple Carplay/Android Auto connectivity.
A 1.6-liter naturally-aspirated inline-four powers the Venue and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. There's no manual option, but with the base automatic already selling at a fair price, it can do without one.
The GS3 may be available with a turbocharged heart, but that variant is already beyond PHP 1 million. Fortunately, GAC also has a naturally-aspirated version of the subcompact crossover. It may not have the power and grunt of the former, but the non-turbo GS3 150N is available at PHP 966,000.
GAC even made sure it came with plenty of safety kits like anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, hill-start assist, and hill-descent control. It doesn't have a touchscreen, but it does have a 2-DIN head unit that supports AM/FM radio, Aux, and USB.
As mentioned earlier, it only has a 1.5-liter naturally-aspirated engine that is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission.
Believe it or not, Geely's best-selling model is available for less than a million Pesos. The entry-level Coolray Comfort can be yours for PHP 978,000, and it also comes with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that puts out 177 PS and 255 Nm of torque. It may not have leather seats, but the entry-level Comfort still has automatic climate control, cruise control, touchscreen media display, 17-inch alloy wheels, six airbags, and a long list of safety features. Just because it's a base model, doesn't mean it skimped on features.
Changan CS 35 Plus
This is probably the most expensive model out of the group, but this sleek crossover from Changan retails at PHP 999,000. It's literally one Peso away from the PHP 1 million mark, but since this is only available in one variant, it's chock-full of amenities and features. And just like the Coolray, it packs a turbocharged 1.5-liter turbo engine that is connected to a dual-clutch transmission.
The next time you're looking to buy an all-new crossover, be glad to know that there are models that are less than a million Pesos but offer value for money. They may be affordably priced, but these vehicles have plenty to offer. Remember, just because it's less than a million Pesos, doesn't mean it's lacking the necessary features and amenities.
Buying a new automobile may be a bit more expensive nowadays, but it's good to know you still have a lot of affordable crossover options around.
