It has been nearly a year since Subaru bid farewell to the current generation STI with the EJ20 Final Edition, and that Subaru may be busy designing and testing the next-generation of their high performance sport saloon. But so far there have been no reports or sightings of the all-new sedan. The only bit of news that was available regarding the future of the WRX STI is the possibility of a more powerful turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four powering the next-generation model.
With its exterior design still a mystery, the guys over at BestCarWeb couldn’t help but render as to what the STI might eventually look like should Subaru reveal it soon.
Based on the design renders, BestCar thinks the turbocharged four-door might receive a look similar to the VIZIV Performance Concept Subaru revealed before, albeit toned down for the constraints of series production. The headlights get a sharper finish while the front grille and bumper look sportier than ever. The rear, on the other hand, gets the most noticeable change with the sharper-looking C-shaped taillights and redesigned trunk. The massive rear wing, as well as the signature quad exhausts, may still be available on the next-gen WRX STI.
But could the next-generation WRX STI really look like the renders from BestCar? Perhaps, but with Subaru reportedly looking to use the modular Subaru Global Platform (SGP), the overall design might be different than what BestCarWeb has rendered. More than likely, it might have a redesigned look that may be similar to that of the current Impreza.
But when will the all-new WRX and WRX STI actually be revealed? Well, it will supposedly be revealed in the middle of 2021 and in the first half of 2022, respectively. Should it be true, we certainly cannot wait to see if both cars will be powered by the new 2.4-liter FA24 turbocharged flat-four that could reportedly make up to 400 PS and 490 Nm of torque.
