Porsche has something big in store for the 2021 IAA Show.
It’s an all-new concept vehicle, but what is it? So far, all we have to go on is a teaser image that showcases the design of the headlight, a portion of the hood and bumper, and that the vehicle is color red. In an Instagram post published by the automaker, they mention the vehicle will be inspired and/or related to motorsports.
First, let’s talk about what we know. The headlights are quite futuristic with four main white elements and a turn signal fitted inside a black housing. The unique shape of the headlight does remind us of the 996-generation 911 “runny-egg” light. Given that Porsche did call the vehicle a concept study, could the not-so-popular design make a comeback in the future? It’s possible.
As for the concept itself, it will likely be a performance vehicle. Porsche did use the “sportscar” hashtag on Instagram. That’s in addition to the motorsport-related caption they used for the photo. But given that the automaker is pushing for an electric future, could it be a race-prepped version of the Taycan or an all-new model? It’s possible.
Another possibility would be a two-door sports coupe. The concept could preview the future Cayman/Boxster but as an electric vehicle. For reference, the current 718 Cayman/Boxster has been in production since 2016, making it 5 years old this year. With that, the next-generation model could arrive in 2 to 3 years minus the combustion engine.
Porsche did say it expects 80% of vehicles sold by 2030 would be electric. The only exception to that rule would be the 911; it will be the last Porsche to go full electric. So an electric Cayman/Boxster isn’t too far-fetched.
Fortunately, we won’t have to wait too long before the mystery Porsche is revealed. The concept vehicle will officially debut on September 6, 2021.
