The Mercedes-Benz V-Class and Vito models will soon be joined by the all-new Citan. After announcing last year that they will be collaborating with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance to make the next-generation van, Mercedes-Benz has announced that they will be revealing the next-generation Citan soon.
Just how soon? Well, the company said that they plan to reveal it sometime in Q2 of 2021. Like its predecessor (pictured above), the all-new compact van will compete in the small van segment. As it is billed as a utility van, it can be used for commercial needs or as a people carrier. Depending on the variant, it can also be specified as a panel van, or as an MPV.
So we already have an idea when it will be revealed, but what will be some of its distinct features? According to Mercedes-Benz, the Citan will offer generous cargo space despite having compact outside dimensions. It will have wide-opening sliding doors, as well as a low loading sill to enable easier and comfortable access towards the back.
We still do not know the design of the 2021 Citan. But since it’ll be all-new, it could borrow design cues from the V-Class. That means it might get tapered headlights, a bigger front grille, and maybe slightly bigger dimensions.
Details about its powertrain are not yet available. However, Mercedes-Benz did say that there will be an all-electric version available as well. Aside from that, turbocharged engines could also be available for the new Citan.
Would the all-new Citan make sense in the Philippine market? Currently, Mercedes-Benz only offers the V-Class and Vito vans in the country. While spacious and practical, they're not exactly small. Perhaps the smaller Citan might attract more customers that wish to have a small people carrier but are also looking for a three-pointed star.
