When Xiaomi first announced it was going to sell electric vehicles (EVs), there was skepticism about how the tech company would be able to make that dream a reality. While Xiaomi has the technical know-how, applying it to vehicles was going to be quite the leap for the gadget specialist.

Fast forward to 2025, Xiaomi is now selling the SU7 and the SU7 Ultra EVs which deliver supercar-like performance complete with all kinds of tech. With Xiaomi entering the vehicle market in the PRC with great success, the tech company plans to make its vehicles available to global markets in the future.

This was confirmed by Xiaomi Group president William Lu during the 2025 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Spain where the SU7 Ultra made its first international appearance outside its home market. According to the executive, the company was faced with skepticism from its stakeholders and investors. But when the SU7 officially came out, the SU7 was sold in 2024. It was then followed by the SU7 Ultra which is also becoming a popular choice by buyers.

“After each earnings conference, we communicated with investors, and everyone tended to think that Xiaomi was late, missed the best opportunity, etc. And if the car business is difficult, the mobile phone business will also be greatly dragged down. This is the particularly great pressure we have faced in the capital market in the past few years,” said Lu.

Everything changed, however, when the brand rolled out the SU7. Despite some initial quality issues, the SU7 and SU7 Ultra quickly developed a reputation for delivering supercar-like performance complete with countless high-tech features without the high price tag that's associated with such vehicles.

“But I think the market has greatly changed after the launch in March last year. From SU7 to SU7 Ultra, we have laid a very good foundation in these two battles and dispelled everyone’s doubts about Xiaomi’s late entry into the car manufacturing market, so I think the automotive business has gained a foothold in the Chinese market,” added Lu.

As to when they officially plan to sell their cars overseas, the executive mentioned that their overall strategy is to do well in China first because if they do not have a very good position in their home market, they will struggle to do business outside of it. However, Lu did mention that their ultimate goal is to officially offer cars overseas in 2027.

“As for when to go overseas, our overall strategy is to do well in China now because if a Chinese car company does not have a very good position in its home market, it will be difficult to do business overseas. After MWC, I will visit several European countries to investigate the market and see our global overseas data. I have a goal: I hope we can officially go overseas in 2027,” shared Lu.

We already spotted a Xiaomi SU7 going around the country last year although more than likely it's a gray import. But we'll be keeping our fingers crossed that the Philippine market is included in Xiaomi's plan to offer its EVs in the future.
