Franky Cheng Cong Fu, 2002 China Formula Renault Champion, is the first Chinese to gain a Formula Renault test in UK with a view to joining this years British Formula Renault Championship - underlining China Formula Renault's position as the number one breeding ground in Asia for the young driver.
The test organized by the McLaren Mercedes F1 team went well and Franky's performance in Snetterton circuit was surprisingly good. Senior officials of McLaren said Cheng is the best Chinese driver they ever seen and are actively discussing the possibility of Franky's participation in UK Formula Renault.
The British Formula Renault series is one of the world's most exciting junior single-seater championships which has launched the careers of F1 stars Kimi Raikkonen, Antonio Pizzonia and Pedro de la Rosa.
The 18-year-old boy from Beijing raced with Team Shangsai FRD in this season's Asian Formula Renault having enjoyed a tremendously successful year in 2002 by claiming the China Formula Renault Challenge's crown.
Franky's achievement in being selected by McLaren for test drive is vindication that China Formula Renault is the springboard to international motorsport arena and there is every likelihood that the top three finishers in China Formula Renault will become international racing stars in the near future.
