After Volkswagen’s Ogier and Ingrassia claim their title earlier in October, the brand now claims its Manufacturers’ title in Spain today. With the Rally Spain victory, Volkswagen has now accumulated 382 points. Moreover, this feat was accomplished in its debut season at WRC.
Volkswagen becomes the first team in WRC history to claim all of the titles in its debut season. It has exceeded previous expectations, and now sets a record for these achievements. Originally, the team aimed for podium finishes in the first year, round wins in the second year, before championship titles by the third year.
The drivers and the co-drivers in Rally Spain met challenges during the race: the dust clouds and low morning sun. But Ogier and Ingrassia managed work their way in the course, and gain up to 20 seconds on their direct competitors despite the poor visibility caused by the dust.
Rally Spain was the only segment in the 2013 WRC that covers both asphalt and gravel. The Volkswagen Polo R WRC made 13 of 15 best stage times, and 26 of 45 possible top-three times.
The last segment of this year’s WRC season will be the Wales Rally GB. The rally drivers will compete in the final leg from November 13 to 17.
