Ford builds a new Mustang Cobra Jet to conquer drag strips
Soon-to-be-unleashed Mustang Cobra Jet ready to hit the quarter mile

Ford is clearly not resting on their laurels as the company is set to reveal their quickest, most powerful Mustang drag car to date. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the iconic 'Cobra Jet', the folks over at Ford Performance recently released a teaser photo of an all-new Mustang Cobra Jet.
Limited to only 68 examples, the purpose-built dragster is based off the 2018 Mustang and will benefit from a highly-tuned V8, among other things.
“From the very first Mustang Cobra Jets dominating the 1968 NHRA Winternationals to our modern-day Cobra Jet racers, the Ford Performance Parts team continues to build the Cobra Jet brand based on its success at the track over five decades. That, in turn, has inspired generations of Mustang fans to create their own performance machines for the street,” said Eric Cin, Global Director at Ford Performance Parts.
Built by Ford Performance Parts, the soon-to-be-unveiled Mustang Cobra Jet will be propelled by a 5.2-liter supercharged Coyote V8. No exact output figures have been released but Ford did mention it is capable of 'running the quarter mile in mid 8-second range'.
To keep the car planted to the pavement, the Cobra Jet also benfits from a unique four-link rear suspension as well as a 9-inch solid rear axle from Strange Engineering. Other upgrades installed for the limited-run dragster are the following: NHRA-certified roll cage, Racetech FIA seats, drag-tuned coil-over suspension and specially-designed Weld Racing Wheels with 50th anniversary badging.
Final specifications and details will be released in the coming months while available colors for the Cobra Jet are Race Red and Oxford White. All 68 examples of the Cobra Jet can join National Hot Rod Associated (NHRA) drag race events, along with other several National Mustang Racers Association (NMRA) and National Muscle Car Association (NMCA) classes.
