This April 13-14, the upgraded Subic International Raceway will be unveiled to the motorsports community with the kick-off of the 2002 motor racing season. The new track layout will prove more challenging to drivers and their cars with its uphill and downhill sections and sweeping high-speed corners. Lengthened to a full 3 kilometers, the circuit has undergone improvements in tandem with the continuing development of the Subic Freeport. The curtain-raiser to the 2002 season will be the initial races in the Petron Grand Prix Series. The top Filipino drivers will be racing on the newly-refurbished Subic track for the first time, which is certain to make the opening races all the more exciting. The preeminent names in local racing are all expected to take part. The Ramirez brothers, Jody Coseteng, Mike Potenciano, Jojo Silverio, Nilo Pazcugin, plus the rising talents of Mike Aguilar, Monching Gutierrez, Menchie Francisco and others will debut their new teams, cars and sponsors during these kick-off events.
As host of international racing events for several years now, the Subic International Raceway continues this tradition by staging the first 2 rounds of Asia's premier motorsports event, the Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS), also on April 13 & 14. AFOS features the Asian Formula 2000 (AF2000) and the Asian Touring Car Championship (ATCC) which have been the flagship racing championships in Asia for both single-seater and touring cars respectively.
AF2000 for instance was the training ground for current Malaysian Formula 1 driver Alex Yoong, while Formula 1 test driver Ryo Fukuda spent a season in the ATCC a few years ago. The Asian Festival of Speed remains the place to see up and coming Asian competitors as they pit their skills against each other and the most demanding race tracks in the region. From the Philippines to Malaysia, Thailand, Korea and China, AFOS is the showcase for Asian talent in motorsports.
