The WRX STI is the most potent Subaru you can order today. Even with all-wheel drive and 300 HP and 407 Nm torque on tap, a standard one won’t be enough to compete at the upcoming Gymkhana series for 2020.
In order to be competitive, Subaru USA has built this wild WRX STI for new driver Travis Pastrana who will be taking over duties from Ken Block for the upcoming series.
Subaru calls it the “wildest” WRX STI ever, and it certainly has the looks to match the description. Built together with Vermont SportsCar, the entire body of Travis Pastrana’s new Gymkhana-spec WRX STI is now made from lightweight carbon fiber. An aggressive aero package was also fitted in order to give the race car a really aggressive appeal. For those asking, Subaru says the aero was wind tested as well so it’s not just all for show.
While it still looks like a WRX STI on the outside fitted with wild aero, the same can’t be said about the drivetrain and chassis. For starters, the entire chassis has been cut up and reworked to fit the long-travel suspension needed for Gymkhana. The engine bay shot reveals the heavily modified Subaru Boxer engine paired with a flame-spitting, hood-exit exhaust. At the same time, keen-eyed readers would also notice the tube frame front end and carbon fiber wheel tub. Where’s the radiator you ask? It’s now been relocated to the rear, where the trunk used to be.
Although no interior photos were provided, the cabin has been fully stripped out and race-prepped including a full roll cage and bucket seat. Subaru says it was built to Pastrana’s specs which makes sense considering he will be driving this at the Gymkhana series.
“This STI is unbelievable!” said Pastrana. “We’ve never had the opportunity to do this before, to build a car with no restrictions. Engine, suspension, aero—everything is unlimited, clean sheet. It’s crazy fast, easy to control, and get sideways and it was perfect out of the box in testing. Gymkhana is a new challenge for me but I want to raise the bar, and this is the car to do it.”
While we often associate Ken Block with Gymkhana thanks to his videos on Youtube together with Hoonigan, Pastrana is no stranger to similar events. He has decades of experience in rally, rallycross, supercross, freestyle motocross, and even NASCAR.
Hopefully, we get to see a new Gymkhana video with this WRX STI and Travis Pastrana shredding tires soon.
