Toyota has just unveiled its rally-spec RAV4 that will partake in this year's Rally America 2WD-Open Class. Set to be driven by well-known off-road driver Ryan Millen who won last year's Baja 1000 in a Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, the modified RAV4 features a unique livery, weight reduction and off-road spec equipment.
According to Toyota, the rally SUV is based off a 2015 RAV4 LE model sold in the US and features a three-tone black, red and white paint scheme that is topped off with TRD and sponsors' livery. It appears to have a lowered ride height, 15-inch rally-spec wheels and all-terrain 215/75/R15 BF Goodrich tires.
Additionally, Millen and his crew removed more than 226 kg of dead weight, installed a rollcage for safety and fitted it with front and rear TEIN suspensions.
Powertrain-wise, it only uses the stock 2.5-liter inline-four engine that only puts out 178 PS with 232 Nm of torque and is also mated to the stock 6-speed automatic transmission. Given the amount of weight that the crew had reduced, the unmodified inline-four engine will be enough according to Millen.
“I’ve driven just about everything Toyota has to offer. I’ve been very impressed with the RAV4’s tight, compact body and smooth handling. I’m looking forward to putting it through the paces this season,” said Millen.
The tentative schedule of the 2015 Rally America 2WD-Open Class is as follows:
Idaho Rally - June 13-14
Mendocino Rally - July 18-19
Rally Utah - August 7-8
Gorman Ridge Rally - August 22
Prescott Rally - October 2-3
