Citroen's José María López and Sébastien Loeb emerged victorious in the opening rounds of this year's World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in Argentina.
The Citroen Total WTCC team finished the qualifying round on a strong note as López claimed pole position followed by Yvan Muller, Loeb and Ma Quing Ha. Among the said Citroen dirvers, Muller got the best start as he overtook López during race one. However, the reigning WTCC champion quickly regained the pole position at the first turn. Lap by lap, the gaps between the top three (López, Muller and Loeb) widened significantly.
As a result, López managed to finished ahead of the pack with fellow Citroen drivers Muller and Loeb completing the podium finishers. Honda's Tiago Monteiro and Gabriele Tarquini finished fourth and fifth respectively. On the other hand, Citroen's Ma Quing Hua finished in seventh place after the Chinese driver stalled at the start.
For the second race, Loeb managed to claim the pole position even though he started eight on the grid. Loeb hit the front when his teammate Ma Quing Ha ran wide on lap two. The Chinese driver was also forced to stop due to a grass that amassed in front of his radiator. From there, Loeb seized the opportunity and held off López in second place as he increased his lead to almost five seconds. Completing the top three finishers was Tiago Monteiro which gave Honda's first podium finish in the 2015 WTCC.
After the opening races of the 2015 WTCC, Citroen's López leads the drivers' championship points with 48. He is followed by his teammate Loeb with 43 points and Honda's Monteiro with 28.
Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2015 WTCC will be on April 17 to 19 in Morocco.
