anyone into home theater?

my other thread is 5 years old, so I'll start a new one. 


anyway, I recently replaced the 21" CRT TV in my bedroom with an LG 42LK450 42" Full HD LCD TV. I'm planning to set it up soon.

Buy/fabricate a better TV stand. You'd just need one two levels of shelves nowadays. One for a digital media player, and one for a gaming console (PS3 which can function as your BluRay player). Get a decent receiver which can power your 5 speakers.

My setup at home is just simple. 42in Samsung LCD, Yamaha receiver, 2 B&W 601 for front (donated by my brother), Monitor Audio BX center speaker, Monitor Audio BX1 rear speakers and a JBL powered sub. I just invested in a decent pair of Ecosse speaker wires for the fronts in case I feel like listening to music.

I think my brother still has a pair of the BX1 speakers which he's letting go of for cheap. They're pretty good na for room HT setup.

thats a nice HT setup you have there.

anyway, I'm using the tv stands/ racks I have at the moment. I'll probably have my 42" LG wallmounted sometime in the future, then get a better stand for the receiver, console, and media players I'll be using.

anyway, can you guys recommend a good receiver? I'm considering one of the following models:

Harman Kardon AVR 165
Onkyo TX-NR609
Yamaha RX-V667
Denon 1912

I think the Onkyo is the best choice if they're all within the same price range because you don't need an additional dock for an iPod. You can plug directly into the USB port plus the THX decoder that is just a bonus because it is hardly supported nowadays. Also because of the support by the distributor.

The Denon can also give the Onkyo a run for its money. Network connectivity would be its advantage over the Onkyo at the expense of THX, which you don't use. As for distributor support, I'm not quite sure. But I think its the same distributor. If it is, Denon would be ok too.

For me Denon's are weak. I bought a Denon 1611 at first before my Onkyo and it had a hard time driving my then JBL Studio series bookshelf speakers. Good thing the store where I bought it (Sights and Sounds at Shangri-la) agreed for me to return it and upgrade to the Onkyo 608. But my old receiver, a Sony that only had 75 watts per channel had no difficulties driving my JBL's. Service is very poor with Denon by the way based on what I read at Pinoy DVD. Onkyo has very good service.

Receivers have a certain sound signature and they should match the speakers that you are prospectively buying. Harman receivers have a very "warm" sound which needs to be paired with "bright" sounding speakers.

I have no experience with Yamaha receivers but one of the guys in Pinoy DVD who I always ask advice from uses Yamaha so there must be something good about it to choose it over Onkyo.

I'm curious. why did you go for a yamaha receiver for your HT setup?

Got a very good deal on it. At that time, there were no USB port and network options for all receivers. So they were pretty much the same.

Onkyo Ipod dock
Mediator 300x for my movies
Sony bluray player and Sony dvd player for those local dvd which the bluray player can't play.

I haven't set up the avr and speakers though. there's a leak in my room that needs to be fixed first.
