My Toyota Corolla 1990 1.3XL is already due for major overhauling of engine.  I would like to know from the experts on the pros and cons between overhauling and replacement of engine. Thank you very much for the inputs.

sixpack

Overhauling means you can get new parts for your engine and can be much reliable while buying a surplus engine is somewhat a gamble since you wont be sure if you're getting the good ones.  However if you want bigger engine for your car, surplus engine is only your choice.

lantraluvr

First, compare the cost of overhauling your present motor and buying a surplus engine. Look for the one which is cheaper, then go for it! Usually, it would be cheaper to just swap in a surplus motor.

But why not put a hi-horse motor in that light chassis? 4A-GE anyone? I think it would be cheaper to get this engine and install it than overhauling your 1.3. CHeck which is more practical and inexpensive for you. HTH :)

i agree with both sixpack and lantraluvr, here is your opportunity to have added horsepower, take advantage of the situation.  swapping to a surplus engine maybe more economical but you have to be cautious of engine selection, just make sure you have a competent mechanic and electrician for the job, remember a lot of problem stems from conversion of electronics(wiring).  the same goes for a complete engine overhaul, make sure you have a good mechanic and a competent machine shop to work your engine within the correct specs. good luck. if i were you i would go for the swap.hehe.....

Thank you for the inputs.  I heard engine upgrade from 1300 to lets say 4AGE will involve major modification i.e. engine support mounting. Is this a major concern? Anyone who can recommend reliable mechanic for this job, thanks?

try to post your questions/problems in the TACP (toyota auto club of the phils) board.

many people there have already done an engine transplant like that, they can help you more with their experience. :)

HTH ;D

well, 1.3 ka ngayon diba? my advice is to go 4e-fte nalang, its a turbo pero bolt on lang, di kasing hirap ng 4ag series, n mura ang price per engine...

only drawback is u need 2 fabricate a hood na may scoop, kelangan nung intercooler nya yun e....

installing a 4 a-ge on a corolla 1990 model shouldnt be so difficult, its been done often enough in this county. ae92 ba this model?

kiro

i think kung xl yung oto may konting modifications sa engine mounts.
the 4e-fte sounds interesting...  ;)
