Start with cheap tools, and upgrade only if you have too. That way, if you make a mistake in buying stuff, loose it somewhere (or your friend forgets to give it back), or if you break it, it won't hurt so much.

No disrespect to you, but it is better to buy good quality tools than buy cheap tools because in the end the cost will pay for itselt, and high quality tools obviously will last longer.

I also don't agree with the guy who said that craftsman are not up there in terms of quality compare to Snap-on tools, a lot of racing teams use craftsman and i would think that there's a reason for it. Just like snap-on they are made with high quality steel.

Also, Facom tools are also used by the ferrari racing team. They are very expensive and is not needed by an ordinary backyard mechanic, or by someone who really doesn't really know what he's doing under the hood, maybe if you race professionally, but i  stilll think it's expensive.

Snap-on tools and Craftsman tools or Stanley or Cornwell are high quality brands and cost far less than Facom.

Yes I agree with Shaq1, Craftsman are definitely good in terms of quality and durability with fair price compare to those expensive ones. Most mechanics prefer to have this craftsman I guess its because of the grip..

Anyway, medyo OT sir, meron ba kau alam na mapagkukunan ng Craftsman how much ba isang set nun? would appreciate your feedback..

Not sure of Craftsman but you can get Snap-On from Power Asia and Hazet from MANCOR.

Hazet makes BMW, OPEL, Porsche specific tool-sets are really neat and work in tight confines.

It depends on tool-set size.  The basic complete set for BMW techs has over 200 items and could cost over P100,000.

wow!! cguro almost complete set na un.. So that means 2.5K mura na un though 6 or 8pcs wrenches lang un(not sure).. And that  was last year pa.. I hope ala fake nun pagbili ko kc mahirap malaman kung fake..

Craftsman is the cheapest amongst the U.S. premium brands which include Cornwall, Snap-On and Matco.  My 254 Craftsman set cost less than $300.

got few of those Hazet special tools.   all i can say is that i don't even regret paying that torque wrench at US$425.00.   and a Flare Nut Combination Wrench plus a Hazet Breaker Bar - got some tight bolts somewhere? this thing will break it

wish someone could make a list of tools like:
1) must-have tools (ie. 10 tools you should always bring with you)
2) basic tools for the basic DIY person
3) tools a garage geek should have

sensya na guys ... i'm a car newbie and i'm sometimes overwhelmed at the number of tools being mentions in some boards.

oh and i believe to that quality tools are a must pero pano if talagang lang budget to get those branded stuff?

1) must-have tools (ie. 10 tools you should always bring with you)

well, here's what i have in my car's toolbox and my tiny trunk:
-10mm-17mm close and open combination wrenches
- pliers
- +/- screw drivers
- crocodile jack
- tire wrench
- 1/2' drive ratchet with short and long extensions, 10,12,14mm sockets
- 3/4" drive ratchet with short extension and 10mm socket
- 2x4" 220 grit sand paper
- electrical tape
- blade cutter
- trouble light with 3-meter wire
- jumper wire
- 12v mini air compressor
- assorted spare fuses
- extra 12-volt brake lamp, either to use it for the brake lights or the trouble light.
- and... a swiss army knife  

2) basic tools for the basic DIY person

- the above plus the ff:
- jackstands
- complete socket set (1/2" and 3/4" drive, 6-point and 12-point)
- deep/long sockets
- socket power handle
- torque wrench
- vice grip
- adjustable open wrench
- assorted pliers
- assorted screw drivers
- timing light with rpm advance(optional... way expensive)
- digital multimeter
- asorted allen wrenches
- nylon/plastic/wire brushes, scrapers, etc.
- assorted punch tools
- plastic mallet/hammer or a solid steel one if things gets frustrating  

if going DIY engine rebuilding, it's another different story, too long to list. (bore guauges, digital micrometers and calippers, valve and pistons servicing tools, etc.)

3) tools a garage geek should have

- all of the above plus a 2-Ton portable hydraulic lifter and how much the money can spend (air compressor, huge toolbox, electric power tools(bench and portable electric drills, air impact wrench, chain block or cherry picker tool  etc. etc.

-study and/or review carefully your car's repair manual concerning the procedures required for the repair and go buy the required tools ONLY. I was once a newbie like you

simple, if you like them, save up for more and don't and NEVER trade your own safety when working on your vehicle. Always remember, SAFETY FIRST

yung parang wrnch.. medyo mahirap gamitin
gusto ko sana bumili ng socket wrenches.

Comment lang, 3/4 inch drive is way too big for use on cars. I say 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drive sockets are essential.
