Title: Who is planning to join any series/championships this year?
Post by: nemo on January 03, 2011, 03:22:23 PM
MODS: I have no idea where I could've placed this question, so I made a completely separate one for 2011.

So...

Who amongst you guys are planning to join any competitive series this 2011?

to name a few I believe there's:

1. autocross
2. circuit showdown
3. slalom
4. drag (legitimate ah, not the illegal crap)
5. PTCC/PPCC

#5 obviously is pro-level racing already here in the Philippines.

ako gusto ko kaso sana ...**dreams - sana may magpagamit ng coils at sticky tires**  :violent1:
kaka-frustrate naman.  pwede ako proxy driver?
saka walang hill-climb?  ;D
Title: Re: Who is planning to join any series/championships this year?
Post by: nemo on January 04, 2011, 10:24:04 AM
hill climb nga pala noh? but i would strongly discourage any you from joining if you do not have a roll cage, 4 point harness and racing seat. hill climb may be shorter than a rally and up a hill.. but it's not really a hill, it's a climb up a mountain with drop offs that are wayyyyyy up there. safety first.

anyway, sat night? i'm not sure, i'll be coming from CIS for the final round of PTCC/PPCC. regarding team name, i vote "Team Ishneakey".

You don't necessarily need coilovers to join other amateur events, and you surely don't need the best performance tires out there. So do not let those two obstacles stop you from joining. As long as your car has 100% operational brakes, suspension and engine. go for it! and yes, i mean stock pwedeng pwede na. just get good pads for the brakes and better engine oil (synthetic is A MUST!).

it's all about the fun. yes we may be serious about forming a team, but the principle reason why we have created this team before was for us to compete for the FUN OF IT. be serious, but don't let it ruin the spirit :)

Post Merge: January 04, 2011, 10:32:12 AM

to add...

I definitely want to join 1 this year. *fingers crossed* i'll be using this to test some stuff.

5 is my goal, with the new rules for the national touring car series toyotas will be on the map for sure.

and maybe 4.

so...

if i can't join any events this year, i would gladly be one of your race engineers. ;)

i can imagine that slalom and autocross would be difficult without powersteering. but without coilovers, you can still manage on lowering springs and shock combo. it's all up to the driver on how to control the car with given equipment. your equipment will not make you utilize 100% of your car's set up.. it is the driver that will be able to achieve the car's full potential, and beyond regardless of the set up.

so in a nutshell, autocross is less difficult compared to circuit racing mainly for one reason, big reason: SPEED. you don't reach circuit racing speeds in autocross, so you're not teetering on the limit of adhesion at speeds well over 100kph around pylons in a parking lot.

but needless to say that all forms of motorsport do require skill.

i assume that track and autocross requires different set of driver skills? or they would compliment each other? i would like to concentrate on circuit but should joining autocross be beneficial in upgrading one's driver skill, then i guess it would be a good option to join autocross too.

it's good training for circuit as well since it requires driver sensitivity :)

well... the more events we join, the more we'll get known.

@matt: thanks in advance for your support on this. si shagee na lang ang kulang and we're good to go full force.

@all: i still can't commit yet pero i'll try my best to go with the circuit events... lam nyo naman yung deficiencies ko due to lack of power steering. pero rest assure, i'll be there to support everyone in all the events you chose to join.

Ahh finally. Serious talks about joining one or more of these events. I guess we can check people who will be driving for the team and what events people want to join and take it from there.

One obvious advantage with auto cross and slalom is the cost and the venue's close proximity to the city.

korek! kaya baka dito muna ko pag nagkataon hahaha

para sakin naman ang napansin ko lang sa autocross/slalom, less speed sya kaya hindi masyado nakakatakot unlike sa circuit, kung magkamali ka sigurado kakayanin pa ng brakes wag lang maglock kundi bangketa agad. usually hangang 2nd gear lang sa slalom, 3rd naman sa autocross. maganda syang training ground dahil mahahasa ang precission steering ng driver, masasanay ka rin na dumudulas dulas yung oto during tight turns so you will learn to control the car during those situations which is beneficial sa circuit specially hairpins. youll discover the limits of braking & accelerating too! also weight shifting (though low speed only). pero parang mas madali ang autocross kysa slalom, dahil masyado tight ang slalom, may 180 at 360 turns. ang autocross mas mas marami straights thus required higher gear, mas maluwag ang turns, wala 360, may 180 pero mas wide. ang ayoko lang sa ganito race, masakit sa kamay nakakapulikat, at pag bigla lumaban yung manibela nakakakorbo pag tinamaan ka, nakakahilo, mahirap kabisaduhin yung layout, malakas umubos ng gulong, mas pwersado yung makina.

pag nagsawa ka na sa slalom / autocross and decided to go circuit, maninibago ka kasi feeling mo ang luwag luwag ng track, pero nakakalula kasi ang bilis.  ;D

Autocross and circuit racing for me. ;D

Nemo's right, autocross will improve driver sensibility. Its definitely an "upgrade" if you learned driving from a driving school. I've joining shago's events and I only went up to 3rd gear once.. but the average is 2nd gear. It will surely test how you know your car.

not quite sure what you mean by "set up". suspension setup would take into consideration:

1. tires
2. suspension settings (damper rebound and compression and spring rate)
3. ride height
4. toe in/ toe out
5. camber
6. caster
7. weight ballast
8, swaybar settings
9. brake bias (if you have an adjuster)

there are a few other things but that's it basically

definitely in autoX and slalom you want a car that is more tail happy than a car setup for circuit. reason being is that you don't reach high speeds in autoX and slalom so you can't really use the speed to throw the car around without much effort. in autoX and slalom the transitions from corner to corner are a lot quicker than that of a circuit.

alignment is a constantly changing setting if you really want to get serious. but you can just run your road settings with a bit more camber for circuit and autoX. no problem with that :) it's not a prerequisite to change all your settings naman.

totoo ba na lilipat ang torque sa low/mid at hindi agad magdodrop ang rpm kahit mag lift off kung ang exhaust pipe is 2.5 after the collector, then 2 just before the rear wheel all the way to the muff?

BT is designed to have it's powerband on the upper end of the RPM range. You can only do so much to try and move it down the RPM range.

bagging top places in events is not our concern, bro. yes, it will always be nice to bring home some bacon, but above all else we are merely doing this for the FUN :)

and besides.. wala naman cash prize mga amateur and even pro events.. so why kill each other to grab top 3 finishes?

stock setting pa lang nung bc yung gamit ko. so far so good (i think). havent really driven the car hard. may pasundot sundot ng konti pag maluwag. im almost sure i'll increase damping pag track na.

yung sa autox... ewan ko talaga. as in 0 knowledge hehehe. eto ang bahala na si batman :)

updates from yesterday's circuit showdown 1st leg.

we got there around 800am. registered, took out stuff from the car, added 5 clicks on the coilies and did like 8 practice laps, trying to re-learn driving on track after what 2 years. tried different combinations with braking, engine braking. i think this is where i cooked my brakes.

qualifying proper, added 5 more clicks. my fastest time was 2.20, which turned out to be my fastest for the day (i felt like i was faster during the practice laps). returning to the pit, i really felt my brakes has lesser bite. upon inspection of the brake discs, it seems like i really cooked the thing. dark coloration on 1/4 of the disc, cmiiw but i assume that that means only 1/4 of the pads is making contact on the disc. also parang mas lubog na yung preno.

for the time attack proper, i was hoping i can do better but i know my brakes are not at its best. i tried squeezing the brakes a little harder kaso takot ako i might loose control of the car. and a mitsu loosing its bumper on the chicane didnt help when you're on your 1st hot lap! so im braking a lot earlier, didnt squeeze the throttle much. in the end i got consistent 2.29 :) hehhehe i think that's good enough for last place :)

lastly, im not that happy with my tires. i can hear them screeching in some turns, and i feel that im sliding in some. i hope a little tweak in tire pressure will be ok n.. in the end, i definitely need practice! brake pads and change oil on my to do list this coming week. :)

on a brighter note, the coilies are freaking good! :)

tire screaching is good. if you don't want to hear tire screeching on the limit, use slicks. you'll barely hear the screach haha but then suddenly lose control if you go beyond it's traction limit.

anyway, you'll have to find the proper chassis set up with your coilovers to match your tires. stiffening your dampers won't do you much good if you can't adjust your spring rate. you have to match your damper setting, spring rate and tires all together. and of course, alignment.

glad you had fun, bro :) i'll try joining you on your next practice leg or round 2 ng CIS. most probably by that time, top speed ko sa highway 60kph lang. haha pahitch nlang! :P

congratulations on your first CIS round, bro :) more power!

@rt.. thanks :)

@nemo... actually im ok with the tire screeching. my concern is actually more on i am hitting the traction limit of the tires agad. konti lang naman yung screech but i think 5 or 10km/h more and that's it diba. i dont have the balls (yet) to push it a little more :)

i stiffened the dampers because my left rear tire's making contact with the fender when im into the 2nd corner. actually dun lang naman sya tumatama. tupi na lang ng konti siguro yung fender then i'll try a different setting.

you can see the times already at the cs website :)

tire screeching per se isn't really an accurate indication of whether or not you are nearing the traction limit or even at it. best way is to read tire temperatures versus scrub radius ;)

Papa Chris, are you joining the 2nd Leg? Trying to analyze my budget. I think I can only afford to join every other leg.  This "sport" is expensive!!!  :crybaby2:
Anyway, for me, I just followed Matt's advise... don't kill myself racing. Was still so scared of the RBend where I totalled my front last year. 2.20.967 best qualifying time. 20.20.973 best time attack.  Bagal. But then I wouldn't even dare join in the first place if not for our trackdays last year ;D
Can we just practice this April?   ;D

as of now, yes i am joining the 2nd round. i've talked to matt and we might go to clark a week before the 2nd leg to practice.  :) well at least that's the plan :)

buti nga ikaw you're consistent. i slowed down by 9sec during the time attack na. felt my brakes are not at its best nung qualifying, lalo na nung time attack. better safe hehehe :)

good thing your car is ok :)
