In my experience, it's useless because the secondary muffler which is normally a silencer will limit better air flow as compared to straight flow muffler.

By the way what is your car ?

Have your mazda lifted to check size of exhaust pipes from the engine down to muffler. In my civic 1.8L, I changed the 1.75" diam. to 2.0" all through out. I retained the resonator and changed the muffler to straight flow. But this straight flow has some sound deadening material inside.  The sound is acceptable even at 4000 + rpm, you can still hear ur car stereo. It has a mid bass sound.

if im not mistaken i think the mazda3 got a stock 2" pipe...the muffler is in the middle of the car. might as well change the muffler if your changing the pipes anyway.
