New API Rating SN
« on: September 06, 2011, 06:56:44 PM »
Hey guys I was in Autoplus earlier and I noticed that there is a new API rating which is SN.

From the API web site:

Quote
Introduced in October 2010 for 2011 and older vehicles, designed to provide improved high temperature
deposit protection for pistons, more stringent sludge control, and seal compatibility. API SN with Resource
Conserving matches ILSAC GF-5 by combining API SN performance with improved fuel economy, turbocharger protection, emission control system compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.

Motul H-Tech 100 Plus 0W20 and H-Tech 100 Plus 5W30 were two oils that I saw earlier that had API-SN ratings.

So does this confirm that ethanol really harms the engine? Because as stated "protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85" This statement comes from the API.

Probably due to the water attracting property of Ethanol, that's why engines need more protection.

still wondering why motor oil prices here are so high compared to the US? plus there are a lot of cheaters (repacked, re labeled thick oil)

cars / engines here only last til' mid 150,000kms*

*in the US, cars can go 200,000miles easily without any problems

i.e. mobil1 = $8.5 / l
     amsoil = $11.0 / l
     castrol =  $8.5 / l

Fact: 40 to 50 years from now, there's not gonna be any oil left in the world. This is why power, oil and energy companies are now venturing renewable energies.

Fuel and oil prices will spike up as the years go by.

Thanks for the generous offer Aki, but Motul is still the best performer for my car.  ;D
