since the car is quite old, i recommend you try 10w-40 liqui moly mo2. if your lucky, compression will improve. i've tried on couple of my clients in the USA. 3 out of 5 cars that were smoking a bit (minor blue smoke) went away, plus compression after improved.

I think the mo2 (molybdenium disulphide) additive has something to do with it. good luck!

Hi, can thin engine oils cause your engine to become noisy?  I have a 5 year old Hyundai Getz 1.1L and have been using Motul Htech 100 10w-40 for the past 3 oil changes.  I really can't remember the sound of my engine when it was still new (and using the casa's 20w-50 oil) but it now makes rather loud ticking noises when idling and also while revving.  A mechanic advised that my oil is what's causing it because, according to him, Motul oil is very thin.  Honestly, I don't buy it that's why I'm here now  ;)

A 40 weight oil too thin? I'd advise you to stay as far away from  that mechanic as possible.

Get the valve clearance adjusted, it's not self-adjusting you know. If you still have the manual, it's indicated there as to what mm the clearance should be. Contrary to what your "genius" mechanic had prescribed, low friction thinner oil like 5w30 will make your engine run quietly.

Also, if it's a 5 year old Getz, carbon deposits and sludge may have already accumulated in time so you might want to take it to a more reputable shop that knows their craft. If you're within Manila I would suggest you go to Autoplus Edsa and have it tuned properly.

Come to think of it, the next line that mechanic said after blaming my oil was "We have this oil change package.." Geez..
Anyway, I was also thinking that the valves are the culprit here and I also have the clearance specifications.  I just can't seem to find a shop that can do it; aside from the dealership who claim they need half a day just to even diagnose the problem.  Do you know of any reputable shops in the Alabang, Paranaque or Las Pinas area?
Thanks so much for the input :)

Why not bring it to Hyundai Dasmarinas? I would recommend as well that you take it to the dealer, once they have adjusted the clearance, an onboard OBD testing will be done. Half day is reasonable considering the customers they serve in a day. Get an appointment with them so you can be assured that the schedule is blocked for your car only.

If tappets are noisy, yes it's the valve lifters. It took mine about half day to get it corrected plus Hyundai Dasma is one the few dealers that charges less as compared to others.

Sir, i would recommend that you bring it to Pitworkz by Hongly shop, its located in front of Wilcon Depot Sucat. Just look for the owner Allan Motol, he'd be happy to help, or call him at 8295429. Im pretty sure that theyre knowledgeable when it comes to hyundai cars.      Plus theyre an authorized motul product carrier!  :wav:
