passive crossovers with bi-wiring capabilities allow you to power the tweeters and mid-basses independently from one another.

normally, you only use 2channels to power a set of 2way seps. when you bi-wire them, you use 2channels to power the tweeters and 2 channels to power the midbasses but you still use the passive crossover to filter the frequencies for each type of speaker.

the more "familiar" word for this is

bi-amp  rather than bi-wiring.

and what it is for...andrew has explained it very well

since each pair of speaks are driven by separate amp channels, this would give better flexibility in tweaking.  such as gain control and xover freqencies(if used inline with an active xover)  etc

ok, pwede ata sakin yan. ask ko lang no. i have 4ch amp. yung head unit ko alpine 7998. meron syang option kung 2way system (front, rear, sub) or 3way system (tweeter, midbass, nd sub).
supposing ilagay ko 3 way. kailangan ko pa ba xternal xover, e meron nang xover yung head unit ko?

X-over na ng head unit ang gagamitin. You just need 4-channel amp for the seps (assuming 2-way, midbass and tweeter) then another amp (2-ch bridged or mono-amp, up to you), for your sub.

agree with master slushbox. welcome back sir!~ ;)
If I were you, I'd look at myself in the mirror and ask, "Now what can I add to my system today?"
