Buying a new MPV (or AUV / SUV)
« on: July 17, 2012, 05:29:13 PM »
Hi, I'm new to the forums and looking for solid advice. I'm a young professional with a good job. My automotive knowledge includes driving, cleaning, gas up and paying a mechanic to do everything else. I know that's bad so I'm here to learn and maybe even do stuff myself rather than having a mechanic do it.

I'm currently driving a 1995 Pajero that's been in the family since 2000 and I'm looking into replacing it. (Will post restoration idea at a separate thread)

I want to drive a vehicle larger and more spacious than a sedan.  I also want a diesel with M/T.

So far, my choices include Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Innova, Hyundai Tucson T2, Mitsubishi Adventure (Super) Sport SE, Mitsubishi Strada, Mitsubishi ASX and Mitsubishi Montero Sport.

I'm not particular into getting a 4WD / AWD as I don't see myself needing those features. I feel the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Montero Sport might be too high end for me at 1.3M.

This leaves the Innova, Tucson, Strada, ASX and Adventure. It would be very helpful if you helped me out in the pros and cons of each vehicle. What I'm really after is a multi-purpose vehicle that has a lot of space, reasonable power at a reasonable price and economical to drive. I don't intend on having it serviced at the casa later on, so a vehicle that is easy to maintain with abundance of spares and the regular trip to the local mechanic after warranty is over will be a big plus.

Thanks for your comments!

thanks DTNS, I have the same price when I scouted the official price of that Montero Sport. When I compare it to the Innova J/E/G, there's a difference of 100k (G) to 300k (J). Is the difference worth it?

I might as well ask, if it says 1.198M, how much do i really pay, including registration, insurance + other charges if I'm getting a 5-year loan (in general only)?

IMHO, YES it's worth it! I have an aunt who bought a top-of-the-line Innova, when we told her that we got a Montero Sport for 1.168M, nanghinayang cya. lol!  ;D have some 70k on hand for insurance and LTO reg. scout around for the best deals in car insurance. in-house insurance are sometimes good too.

I do have one caveat on the Montero Sport -- its third row seats are cramped. legroom is only good for kids. its not like the Fortuner and Innova that have a lowered middle floor section for extra legroom. the third row seats fold flat though. so it can carry more cargo than a Fortuner/ Innova.

I should have explained myself better when i said I wanted a lot of space. The third row seats are irrelevant or a small matter to me, as I intend to have a sort-of-clothesline at the back to hang stuff. How do the Montero's seats fold btw? To the side or towards the 2nd middle row?

the third row folds flat forward towards the middle row.

The Innova is more practical in most aspects... except that its third row folds towards the side (kinda bulky). It's also more stable and more fuel efficient.

The Montero Sport is much more comfortable, though.

definitely worth it, biases aside :)
if i remember correctly, mitsubishi dealers have their all in promos, the downpayment already includes insurance, lto etc. so i suggest you request for a computation. they'd be more than happy to help you out with that

young professional so i assume not yet married and no kids? for your purpose and stature i would say leave out the innova. it's not something that you'd pick up chicks with imo. it's practical yes, we have one, but if you want to be for "porma" errr...

i think the montero sport or strada would serve you well. the asx and tucson looks too mommy for me and the adventure should be left in the middle ages. you've had problems with your pajero right? well the adventure has the same old tech engine so....
