HPG and MMDA studying feasibility of double-decker buses on EDSA
Wouldn’t it be the biggest throwback to see double-decker buses travelling on the streets of Metro Manila again?
Well if the proposal of Bataan Rep. Enrique "Tet" Garcia Jr. gets the nod from both the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), we might be have it back on the streets sooner than you think.
The ‘proposed’ plan is to replace regular buses that travel on EDSA with double-decker buses in order transport more people while lessening the number of public utility buses (PUBs) on the road.
It will also give operators a reason to upgrade their units and get rid of the dilapidated PUBs that, on occasion, break down or malfunction during operation resulting in accidents and sometimes property damage and worse, loss of life.
“Of the 4,936 franchised buses in Metro Manila, 3,421 are currently plying along Edsa. If double-deck buses are used, we not only lessen pollution but provide more road space as well without lessening seating space capacity,” said MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino.
