Joint operation aggressively targets bus violations in key areas in Metro Manila
The Metro Manila Development Authority and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board today began the implementation of OPLAN Goliath, aggressively flagging down buses and impounding the ones with violations.
The two government agencies moved swiftly to apprehend buses along EDSA today, checking for any violations ranging from out-of-line (plying the wrong route), expired franchises or no franchises (colorum), among other things.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino and LTFRB Chief of Staff Dennis Barrion were on site to oversee the operations personally. MMDA and LTFRB personnel flagged down and conducted online verifications the status of a bus’s franchise, impounding any erring vehicle.
As of 2:00PM today, OPLAN Goliath impounded 22 buses with violations.
The move follows the City of Manila’s clamp down on colorum as well as bus companies without dedicated terminals as per the order of former-President now Manila Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada.
OPLAN Goliath also follows after Senator JV Ejercito’s sharp criticism of the LTFRB for indiscriminately issuing franchises, as well as the criticisms against MMDA Chairman Tolentino in various media and social networking by the motoring public for proposing a ‘two-day number coding scheme’.
OPLAN Goliath will continue until the end of January 2014.
