Three-year old regulation requires training and certification of bus drivers

In light of the most recent bus accident involving a Dela Rosa bus ramming and crushing a Toyota Vios, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) reminds all bus companies about a three-year old regulation requiring all public utility bus drivers to be trained and certified by TESDA before ferrying passengers.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO), the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) requires each bus driver to possess a National Certificate (NC) III and the only way to acquire it is to pass the TESDA assessment.

“The certification will ensure that public buses plying the roads are being manned by responsible and skilled drivers.  With the Tesda certification, appropriate skills and adequate pay, we believe that there will be less, if not zero accidents, on the road,” said TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva in a statement.

Bus companies who hire drivers without certification may be suspended or have their franchise revoked.
