School buses are not exactly the most exciting of vehicles. Built to ferry kids to and from school, these leviathans live a thankless life and are cumbersome to drive, especially when filled with kids.
But what if you need something that can double as a school bus, as well as a go-anywhere vehicle. Well, you have to look no further than Torsus, a Czech-based company that specializes in making off-road 4x4 buses.
This is the Praetorian School Bus, and it's one badass-looking school bus on steroids. Built and designed 'for the toughest school run routes in the world', this bus can carry 35 students across any terrain in comfort and safety.
It is based on the same platform as the standard Praetorian 4x4 bus – which means it gets a heavy-duty MAN chassis, upgraded suspension with bigger springs, and massive 20-inch alloy wheels with 395/85 Michelin tires. The result is a ground clearance of 340mm, approach and departure angles of 32 and 36 degrees respectively, and the ability to wade through waters as high as 900mm.
Powering this beast of a school bus is a 6.9-liter turbo-diesel straight-six that generates 290 PS and 1,150 Nm of torque Power is then sent to a nine-speed automatic transmission with manual select. To make sure it can go the distance, this bus has a 300-liter fuel tank. Aside from that, the school bus also has front and rear locking differentials and an optional air suspension system for added capability.
“The Praetorian by Torsus is made to be adaptable and versatile, so naturally we are looking at other ways the bus can be used in various situations around the world. The school bus was one of the first ideas we had, as the Praetorian is a safe and solid vehicle that we know can keep its occupants protected in even the most testing of conditions,” said Vakhtang Dzhukashvili, CEO of Torsus.
Should your typical school run route happen to be filled with all kinds of off-road terrain and debris, perhaps the Praetorian School Bus is the vehicle to go to. And if that's not what you need, Torsus also makes other Praetorian buses that can be used for evacuation, overlanding, safari, as well as a motorsport support vehicle.
