The current-generation R35 GT-R is one of, if not the oldest model in Nissan's current lineup. The flagship model has been in production since 2007. Nissan does update the vehicle over the years to keep it looking fresh and new. Last year, the automaker updated the GT-R NISMO once again for the 2022 model year. This time, it received new wheels, an exposed carbon fiber hood, and new paint, with everything else remaining unchanged.

Considering how old the GT-R is, you'd expect sales to be very low. More so with the expensive GT-R NSIMO. Well, it seems that isn't the case, at least in Japan. When Nissan opened the pre-order books for the 2022 GT-R NISMO last April, the automaker received a total of 171 pre-orders as of June 16, 2021. What's more interesting is the number of pre-orders even exceed the number of GT-R NISMO units sold last year. For reference, Nissan only sold 131 units of the GT-R NISMO from April 2020 to 2021.

What's surprising is customers ordered the vehicle without knowing how much it costs. Nissan says the price of the 2022 GT-R NISMO will only be announced in August. Meanwhile, deliveries will only begin in October.

Among the pre-orders, 99% of the vehicles were the 2022 GT-R NISMO Special edition. As for colors, Nissan says the new Stealth Gray color had the most number of purchases, accounting for up to 50% or more. We're not surprised with the latter; it is the new exclusive color, after all. It also matches well with the new exposed dry carbon hood.

By next year, the R35 will be 15 years old. With that in mind, it might not be long now before Nissan introduces the next-generation GT-R. Who knows, we might see a GT-R prototype by next year.
