All-new RZ 450e signals Lexus PH’s electric future
After announcing its imminent arrival last week, Lexus Philippines has officially launched its first battery electric vehicle (BEV) in the country. This is the 2023 Lexus RZ 450e, combining sharp sexy looks with a zero-emissions powertrain.
Signaling Lexus Philippines’ entry into electrification, the RZ 450e serves as an important step towards the brand’s foray into zero-emissions.
Beginning with its hardware, the all-electric RZ is powered by a pair of electric motors along with a 71.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The two motors generate a combined system output of 313 PS and a generous 435 Nm of torque. When it comes to range, Lexus Philippines says the EV can cover 450 km on a full charge.
Giving the RZ 450e its quickness and agility is Direct4, the vehicle’s AWD system. With its low center of gravity, instantaneous acceleration, and floor-mounted battery, the RZ 450e can sprint from 0 - 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds despite weighing over 2,110 kg.
Every RZ 450e comes with an onboard 11kW charger. When connected to a three-phase power supply, a full charge will take around 6.5 hours. However, a one-phase power supply will take around 10 hours as it will only run on 7 kW. To speed up this process, the RZ 450e also supports DC fast charging which can bring power up to 80% in around 30 minutes.
In terms of size, the Lexus RZ 450e measures 4805mm long, 1895mm wide, and 1635mm tall. It also has a generous 2850mm wheelbase and short overhangs for good measure - 975mm at the front and 980mm at the rear. Given its dimensions, the RZ 450e sits between the NX and the much larger RX.
Style-wise, the RZ 450e features the brand’s Seamless e-Motion design language which highlights the automaker’s driving pleasure into electrification. With no engine up front, Lexus designers had more creative freedom to play with the overall look of the RZ. This also allowed the automaker to put forth an even more prominent spindle grille, along with a pair of more dynamic-looking LED headlights.
The RZ also has a coupe-like roof which gives the EV a more aerodynamic shape, a full-width LED lightbar that highlights the EV’s width, and deep creases and muscular curves on the side to complete the RZ’s sleek appearance. It sits on huge 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 235/50 tires in front and 255/45 tires at the rear.
Like all Lexus vehicles, the RZ 450e is packed to the brim with features and amenities. The dashboard is fitted with a pair of displays - the digital instrument cluster measures 8 inches while the touchscreen infotainment system comes in at 14 inches. It has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a navigation system, a host of USB charging ports (Type A and Type C), a power outlet, a multi-color LED ambient lighting system, a wireless charging pad, and a dual-zone climate control.
Other available features fitted include the following; power-adjustable front seats (with driver memory function), 60:40 split-folding rear seats, ventilated front seats, a 10-speaker Mark Levinson sound system, an electronic parking brake, a 360-degree panoramic camera system, a panoramic roof, and a heads-up color display. Providing extra peace of mind comes in the form of the Lexus Safety System + 3 which comes with a wide array of intelligent driver aids and assistance features.
Available colors for the 2023 Lexus RZ 450e include Aether Metallic, Graphite Black Glass Flake, Sonic Chrome, Sonic Copper, Sonic Iridium, and Sonic Quartz. Two-tone finishes are also available for the Aether Metallic, Sonic Chrome, and Sonic Copper hues which are paired with a black-painted roof.
