All-new Triton Strada launched in Thailand

After a lengthy teaser campaign, it's time for us to see the 6th generation of Mitsubishi's mid-size pickup truck.

Mitsubishi Motors has unveiled the all-new Triton Strada to the world, showing off a bigger body, an improved turbodiesel engine, and a host of sophisticated safety and off-road features.

Numbers-wise, the all-new Strada measures 5360 mm long, 1930 mm wide, 1815 mm tall, and has a 3130 mm wheelbase. This puts Mitsubishi from being the smallest in the class to one of the largest in the segment. For context, the current-generation Hilux is 5325 mm long, 1855 mm wide, 1815 mm tall, and has a 3085 mm wheelbase.

The platform is completely new, as they made improvements on the chassis rigidity, plus the flexibility to adapt to different body styles. They also gave emphasis on improving its suspension. Mitsubishi gave the all-new Strada a longer travel suspension and bigger dampers. For hauling purposes, the all-new Strada has a 3.5-ton rated towing capacity.

They unveiled both the standard double cab variant and the sporty Athlete version. Like before, the Athlete gets blacked-out accents compared to the standard model's chrome bits.

Looks-wise, the all-new pickup truck is very similar to the XRT Concept we saw at this year's Bangkok International Motor Show. Gone is the J-line design that featured in the 4th and 5th generation Strada; the new model goes back to having a boxy stance to exhibit muscular looks.

Mitsubishi did the T-shaped LED lighting treatment to both the head and taillights, while the latest evolution of their Dynamic Shield design is made evident, as it shares similar looks with the Xpander Cross MPV. For easier loading, the all-new Strada also gets a tailgate assist available in its list of standard exterior equipment.

Inside the all-new Strada is a cabin that has stepped up in terms of features and material quality. There's a new analog instrument cluster with a digital multi-information display and a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen with connected drive services. Sharing its bits with the Navara, the all-new Strada now has an around-view monitor for better maneuvering of the much larger truck. Other interior bits include a new steering wheel and a dual-zone climate control system.

Underneath the hood is a new 2.4-liter 4N16 four-cylinder turbodiesel that's making more power than the outgoing 4N15. The new diesel engine now puts out 204 PS and 470 Nm of torque in its most powerful form. Mid-grade variants, meanwhile, produce 184 PS with 430 Nm of torque. As for the fleet versions, the engine puts out 150 PS and 330 Nm of torque. Mitsubishi carried over the 6-speed automatic transmission, while 4x4 variants benefit from Mitsubishi's competition-proven Super Select 4WD-II system with active brake-controlled LSD. The new terrain mode lets the driver select between Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock.

In terms of safety, Mitsubishi went all-out in giving the Strada the most advanced and modern features. Those include Mitsubishi's Active Stability and Traction Control (M-ASTC), Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist, as well as ADAS systems such as Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Driver Monitoring System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, Front and Rear Automatic Emergency Braking, Automatic Post Collision Braking, among others.

With Mitsubishi prioritizing growth in the ASEAN market, this means Southeast Asian countries like ours will be getting the all-new Triton Strada sooner than the rest of the globe. Thailand will get first dibs, but other ASEAN countries will follow.
