There' nothing like a stonking V8 to get your blood pumping, especially on American cars. Loud, thunderous, and chock-full of torque, V8 cars live off the thrill of going fast while making a lot of noise.

Nowadays, American muscle and pony cars don't only come with eight cylinders as most are now available with four or six-cylinders. While smaller turbocharged engines can still deliver plenty of driving thrills, purists will argue that they are not as fun and that there is still 'no replacement for displacement'. Ford, however, plans to change that notion altogether.

Say hello to the 2020 Ford Mustang EcoBoost High Performance, a more powerful version of the turbocharged pony car that also comes with GT Performance upgrades.

While it may have the same number of cylinders as a standard EcoBoost 'Stang, the one on this particular pony has Focus RS DNA. That's right, Ford decided that the best way to crank out more horsepower and torque from a turbocharged four-cylinder is to build a new variant of the engine and imbue it with hot hatch performance.

The result is 334 PS with 474 Nm of torque thanks to a new high-performance cylinder head, larger twin-scroll turbo compressors, as well as a bigger radiator. Compared to the run-of-the-mill EcoBoost, the High Performance version makes 20 PS more. Torque remains the same, however like the standard models. With the upgraded engine, the six-speed automatic has been replaced by the newer ten-speed auto while the six-speed manual is now sourced from Getrag.

Apart from giving the turbocharged Mustang a more powerful heart, Ford was also busy giving it handling and chassis upgrades. It gets bigger disc brakes borrowed from the GT, four-piston calipers on all four corners, a strut tower brace to stiffen the chassis up front, a tweaked electronic power steering, a new 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels.

Ford prefers to call the turbo Mustang a sports car rather than a pony car with American muscle. Whatever they call it, it's got 'fast' written all over it.
