Former Suzuki Motor Corporation Chairman and president Osamu Suzuki dies at 94.

Osamu Suzuki, the former Chairman and President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, died on December 25, 2024, at the age of 94. The Japanese automaker announced in an official statement that their Senior Advisor succumbed to malignant lymphoma in Shizuoka Prefecture.

Born Osamu Matsuda in 1930, he adopted the Suzuki surname upon marrying Shoko Suzuki, granddaughter of the company's founder, Michio Suzuki. He took over the company in 1978 as the fourth adopted son to lead Suzuki.

Under Suzuki's leadership, the company achieved global success as a leading manufacturer of small cars. His strategic focus on expanding into new markets, particularly through the pivotal partnership with Maruti in India in 1982, proved highly successful. Known for his diplomatic approach and frugal business practices, Suzuki oversaw the establishment of 60 manufacturing plants across 31 countries and brought the Suzuki brand to 190 nations.

While the company's short-lived alliance with Volkswagen in 2009 was unsuccessful, Suzuki forged a successful partnership with Toyota in 2016. Both companies subsequently acquired stakes in each other, leading to collaborations on badge-engineered models and other synergies. This partnership will further expand with Suzuki supplying electric vehicles to Toyota starting in 2025.

In accordance with Suzuki's wishes, a private funeral was held for close family, and the company respectfully declined condolence visits, offerings, and tributes.
