Kia has just received not one but two awards from this year's World Car Awards.
First off is the Kia Telluride full-size SUV being hailed as the 2020 World Car of The Year. Out of a list of 29 vehicles, the Telluride was declared the winner. According to the automaker, the SUV was rewarded by the judging panel for its distinctive design and impressive practicality.
Revealed during the 2019 North American International Auto Show, the Telluride is essentially Kia's stab against the likes of the Mazda CX-9, Ford Explorer, and its twin the Hyundai Palisade. Built and designed in the US, it features a bold design that consists of a squared-off look from bumper to bumper.
Under the hood, the Telluride is only available with one engine option: a 3.8-liter V6 that produces 291 PS and 355 Nm of torque. Power is then delivered to an eight-speed automatic transmission that can drive either just the front wheels or all four thanks to all-wheel drive.
The Telluride is equipped with a bevy of high-tech safety features like self-leveling suspension, traffic collision avoidance, blind spot avoidance, smart cruise control, and driver attention warning. For amenities, it's available with a 10-speaker sound system from Harman Kardon, a floating touchscreen infotainment system, neat touches of leather and wood, six USB ports, and a wireless smartphone charger.
Meanwhile, garnering this year's World Urban Car award is the Kia Soul EV. First revealed in November 2018, the electric vehicle was launched alongside the new-generation model. It packs a 64 kWh battery pack which allows it to have a range of 386 km. It also produces a hefty 201 PS and 395 Nm of torque.
“Everyone at Kia is truly honored to receive not just one, but two awards from the World Car of the Year judging panel,” said Thomas Schemera, Executive Vice President and Head of Product Division at Kia Motors Corporation. “This is one of the hardest-fought competitions in the global automotive industry, proving that the Telluride and Soul EV are both truly outstanding vehicles. These accolades are a testament to the talents and efforts of a worldwide team, who all strive to create desirable, high-quality and practical cars that drivers love.”
Thinking of actually getting a Telluride soon? Sadly, Kia Philippines president Manny Aligada said that the Telluride will not be offered in the country. Since the vehicle is made in the US, the Telluride will not benefit from the ASEAN-Korean Free Trade agreement, meaning it will be too expensive if Kia Philippines were to bring it here.
Still, at least Kia was able to prove that not only can they make quality hatchbacks, sedans, crossovers, and people carriers but also award-winning, full-sized SUVs.
