Report: Mitsubishi to join forces with Nissan-Honda EV alliance
More Japanese EVs are coming soon from the Mitsubishi-Honda-Nissan partnership

Earlier this year, Nissan and Honda confirmed they are partnering up to develop electric vehicles (EVs). Both automakers signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to study a possible strategic collaboration on EVs and related EV software.
While nothing is set in stone yet, the two brands will reportedly share platforms & EV batteries and could cooperate in powertrain development. Not only will the two brands speed up the development of EVs while bringing R&D costs down, but both automakers can leverage each other strengths when it comes to building EVs and electrified vehicles.
Fast forward several months later, it looks like Mitsubishi will be joining the EV alliance of Nissan and Honda. According to a report by Nikkei Asia, Mitsubishi Motors will supposedly join the partnership. Mitsubishi Motors has already signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with Honda and Nissan and has already started discussions with the two brands.
Based on the latest development, Mitsubishi will work with Honda and Nissan to finalize the specific details of the said alliance. Moreover, the three automakers plan to standardize the in-vehicle software for the upcoming EVs. Honda and Nissan are expected to jointly develop the basic software that will control the EV and will discuss it further with Mitsubishi.
Aside from manufacturing EVs, the alliance between Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi will result in each brand complementing each other's lineups. With Mitsubishi's expertise in plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), they can help Honda develop PHEVs in the future. Meanwhile, Honda could help Mitsubishi when it comes to fuel cell (FCEV) technology.
With Mitsubishi looking to make more EVs with the help of Honda and Nissan, the Japanese brands are looking to take on Chinese automakers which are continuing to dominate the EV market.
