RUF, Motul create special 20W-50 oil for classic air-cooled engines
20W-50 mineral oil by RUF and Motul was developed around the needs of classic engines
RUF Automobile and Motul have teamed up to create a new motor oil aimed at keeping some of the world’s most iconic air-cooled engines running for generations to come.
Called the RUF x Motul Heritage Motor Oil 20W-50, the mineral multigrade lubricant was unveiled at the 2026 Goodwood Revival in England alongside RUF’s original Porsche 356.
Unlike modern all-purpose engine oils, the new formulation was developed specifically around the operating characteristics of classic air-cooled engines from the 1950s through the 1970s.
According to RUF and Motul, the 20W-50 formulation was developed specifically for 1950s–1970s air-cooled engines, including naturally aspirated, turbocharged, and supercharged setups. It offers medium detergent levels, compatibility with period gaskets, controlled oil consumption, and strong protection during cold starts and extended storage.

The RUF-Motul partnership began in 2020, when Motul became RUF’s official lubricant partner. For RUF owner Alois Ruf, the new heritage oil is another way to preserve the internal-combustion engines that helped define the company’s history.
“We at RUF have an immense passion for the internal combustion engine and take pride in fine-tuning and future-proofing it the best we can,” Ruf said.
Motul shares the same commitment to preserving automotive heritage, with the collaboration focused on maintaining the authenticity and character of collectible vehicles.
The oil comes in a co-designed 2-liter heritage metal canister, giving it a period-inspired look to match the classic engines it was developed to protect.
