Upcoming BMW i4 Convertible expected to be an electric 2+2
When it comes to convertibles, nothing beats putting the top down, burying your foot on the throttle, hearing the wail of the exhaust, and enjoying the wind in your hair as you accelerate. That has been the appeal of droptops ever since.
However, BMW is set to change that with an upcoming vehicle: the i4 Convertible. That's right, the German automaker was recently spotted by our spies testing a camouflaged prototype of the i4 Convertible, which will reportedly share the architecture of the recently launched i3.
Under the codename NA3, the all-electric 4 Series convertible will reportedly debut in 2028 as a 2+2 droptop. Based on the prototype seen by our spies, the i4 Convertible gets a relatively short wheelbase and a fabric soft-top. The signature dual kidney grille is ever present, along with the brand's distinct headlights, albeit still covered. The taillights are not yet production units, which means this particular prototype may still be a long way from becoming a pre-production model.
Since a convertible loses the structural rigidity of having a fixed roof, droptops usually resort to reinforcing the chassis to compensate for the lack of a hardtop. However, the i4 Convertible's heavier chassis and use of a large battery pack on the floor may already work in favor of such a vehicle. We're also curious how BMW will manage to balance torsional rigidity and the added weight of a battery pack on an EV such as the i4 Convertible.
Beyond having an electric convertible, BMW will supposedly also make a hardtop coupe version aptly named the i4 Coupe (codenamed NA2).
Since the i4 Convertible (and i4 Coupe) will be related to the i3, we can expect the droptop to come with a pair of electric motors that push out 469 PS and 645 Nm of torque. A massive 108 kWh battery pack will likely power the i4 Convertible and give it up to 700 km of range on a single charge.
With 2028 still far away, BMW has plenty of time refining and testing the upcoming electric droptop before the big reveal. The only question now is: will the i4 Convertible be silent, or will BMW give it piped-in sound effects to make up for the lack of an exhaust note?
