Toyota adds PHEV variant to 2025 Alphard
Toyota updates Alphard powertrain with new PHEV variant for 2025 model year

It’s only been two years since Toyota held the world premiere of the Alphard HEV. But things are starting to move at a faster rate now for Japanese manufacturers when it comes to updates.

For the 2025 model year, the Toyota Alphard embraces electrification further with the addition of a plug-in hybrid version (PHEV). The powertrain also applies to the more stylish Vellfire MPV that Toyota is selling in Japan.

The new plug-in hybrid version of the Alphard means the MPV can now cover longer distances under electric power alone, with Toyota claiming an EV driving range of up to 73 km. The Alphard’s TNGA platform has been fitted with a larger capacity lithium-ion battery mounted under the floor, which also gives the MPV a lower center of gravity.
The 2.5-liter A25A-FXS engine is also paired with a high-output density drive motor for the new PHEV system. When combined, the powertrain produces 306 PS and claims to achieve a hybrid fuel economy of up to 16.7 km/l. The PHEV system also utilizes Toyota’s E-Four all-wheel-drive.

In terms of charging, the Alphard’s PHEV architecture is capable of both standard and rapid charging. Under the latter, it takes approximately 38 minutes to top up the batteries to 80% state of charge. With the new PHEV system, the Alphard has been fitted with a 1500W external power supply plug for blackouts and outdoor activity use. It also gains a V2H function, where the electricity stored in the batteries can be used for the household.

Other changes for the Alphard for the 2025 model year include a digital inner mirror with built-in dashcams, a 15-speaker JBL sound system, new exterior colors, and an 8-seater X-grade variant for the Japanese market.

Since the Alphard units sold in the Philippines come from Japan, then there’s good reason to expect the PHEV variant to also make its way to our country. The Land of the Rising Sun will get first dibs on the Alphard PHEV by January 31, 2025 – other markets are likely to follow later in the year.
