Two months ago, Toyota revealed the Land Cruiser Prado 70th Anniversary in celebration of the SUV's enduring legacy. We originally expected the automaker to come out with the special edition for the new 300 Series. But since that was just revealed, Toyota opted to use a Land Cruiser Prado instead.
The special anniversary LC Prado is exclusive only to Japan and is available in limited numbers. Nothing wrong with that, but Toyota Australia believes they can do better by introducing a 70th Anniversary Edition of their own.
Instead of using the new 300 Series or even the outgoing 200 Series, Toyota Australia decided to use a 70 Series (AKA LC70) model of the SUV. Over 30 years on, the LC70 is still being built in Australia and other global markets today. But what special features does the 70th Anniversary Edition have that a standard LC70 lacks?
For starters, the limited edition LC70 comes with heavily blacked-out accents. It gets a black-painted grille with large 'TOYOTA' letters, black bumpers, black headlight bezels, and black fender flares. It's also fitted with 16-inch black alloy wheels to complement the dark exterior. For a better visibility, the foglights and daytime running lights (DRLs) have been upgraded to LED.
Inside, the seats are lined in premium black upholstery to match with the exterior accents. Even the steering wheel and gear shift knob are wrapped in black leather. There's also a new center console that comes with two USB charging ports, a pair of cupholders, and a special plaque with the classic Land Cruiser logo. A wood trim panel on the dashboard/top of the steering wheel and the silver accents on the air vents adds contrast to the black cabin.
Under the hood, the Land Cruiser Prado 70th Anniversary Edition is powered by a 4.5-liter turbo-diesel V8. It makes 203 PS with 430 Nm of torque and is connected to a five-speed manual gearbox. It also has a selectable 4WD system and front/rear locking differentials for added maneuverability in various terrains.
Only 600 units of the LC70 Land Cruiser 70th Anniversary Edition will be made, all of which are exclusive to Australia. There will be 320 double-cab pick-ups, 200 single-cab models, and 80 SUV versions of the special anniversary model. A total of three colors will be available for the limited LC70: French Vanilla, Merlot Red, and Sandy Taupe.
