For enthusiasts who came of age during the height of the import tuning boom in the early 2000s, few aftermarket wheels carry as much nostalgia as the 5Zigen FN01R-C. Now, 25 years after the wheel made its first appearance, the Japanese performance brand has hinted that the legendary five-spoke wheel is making a comeback.

5Zigen recently teased an image of a special anniversary edition FN01R-C on its social media channels, accompanied only by a "coming soon" message. While details remain under wraps, the announcement marks the return of one of the most recognizable and affordable performance wheels of the tuner era.

Founded in Osaka in 1987, 5Zigen (pronounced "Go-Jigen"), which means "Five Dimensions" in Japanese, built its reputation through motorsports.

Best known for its "Try Harder" philosophy that was proudly displayed on its center caps, 5Zigen manufactures a wide range of performance parts, including exhaust systems, suspension components, steering wheels, and alloy wheels, with its racing involvement shaping the development of its road-going products.

Among its extensive lineup, the FN01R wheels became one of the brand's defining products. Featuring a neat five-spoke design, the one-piece wheel gained popularity alongside other 5Zigen tuner favorites such as the six-spoke N1R Becketts and Pro Racer GN+ among others.

The original forged FN01R debuted in 2001 before the more affordable gravity-cast FN01R-C followed in 2002. Although it weighed several pounds more than premium forged alternatives like the Volk TE37 and Enkei RPF1, the FN01R-C appealed to enthusiasts by delivering similar styling and durability at a significantly lower cost.

Production of the FN01R-C ended in 2010, with only the smaller 12- to 17-inch-sized FN01R-C STV remaining in 5Zigen's current catalog for modern front-wheel-drive subcompacts. That has only strengthened the wheel's cult following over the years, with clean used sets becoming more expensive and increasingly difficult to find.

For now, 5Zigen has yet to reveal specifications, finishes, pricing, or availability for the anniversary model. Enthusiasts are hoping the revived FN01R-C will once again be offered in a wide range of diameters, widths, and offsets, including fitments suitable for rear-wheel-drive sports cars, just as the original did.

If the teaser is any indication, one of the defining wheels of the early tuning scene is set to roll back into the spotlight 25 years after it first won over enthusiasts around the world.
