Changing weather conditions at the Clark International Speedway meant there was an added challenge for title contenders in the final showdown of the 2022 Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Cup. And with double points announced for the final leg, the title duel in both the Circuit Championship and Autocross Challenge was wide open.
Starting off with the Autocross Challenge, the weather played a huge role in shaking up the field as the qualifying rounds were held in damp conditions, while the semi-finals were done in bone-dry conditions. For the final round, however, heavy downpour meant the one who can master the treacherous conditions will take the Autocross Challenge titles.
For the Influencers division, Miguel Romulo took top honors for the Promotional Class while Ashley Gosiengfiao and Carla Lizardo placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively. On the other hand, Enzo Pineda finished 1st in the Sporting Class with Jules Aquino and Arron Villaflor completing the podium slots.
In the Media division, AutoIndustriya.com's very own Jamil Lacuna took a clean sweep in the championship, earning his third victory ahead of Ronald delos Reyes and Kevin Francisco in the Sporting Class. Meanwhile, Pablo Salapantan, Siegwald Go, and Riz Javier were the podium performers for the Promotional Class.
The GR GT Cup class saw Russel Reyes regain the top step of the podium with Jether Miole emerging as the runner-up for this final leg. Meanwhile, Mark Voltaire Elman is the GR GT Cup's Mr. Consistency, ending the season by earning a hat trick of third-place finishes.
Moving on to the Circuit Championship, Julia delos Angeles took victory in Race 7 of the Promotional Class ahead of celebrity driver Daniel Matsunaga and Alain Alzona. For the Sporting Class, it was Joaquin Garrido of Obengers Racing Team who took the chequered flag with Troy Montero and Darrel Garbes. In the Super Sporting class, Red Diwa immediately showed his intentions to take the title fight to the wire as he placed 1st ahead of Inigo Anton and John Dizon.
Race 8 however has told a different story in the Promotional Class, as Jarond Mesina of Toyota Team Cebu took the win from Alan Palacios and Jay Lao. The Sporting Class also saw a new set of podium performers as Royce Sarmiento, Russel Cabrera and Maila Alivia placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, respectively. For the Super Sporting Class, it was a 1-2 finish for R Racing Team's Gerard Loy and Bryan Co, while Red Diwa scored another podium finish in 3rd.
With the final championship points hanging in the balance for Race 9, that was when the skies decided to open up and spice things up for drivers racing in the Circuit Championship. A downpour before the race meant the final 10 laps of the 2022 TGR Vios Cup were held in wet conditions.
In the Promotional Class, Jay Lao crossed the line in 1st place ahead of Ian Rosales and Alain Alzona. Meanwhile, the Sporting Class saw Joaquin Garrido take another victory, with newcomer Michael Keilani Jordan scoring his maiden podium in 2nd. Jiro Garbes rounded out the podium in 3rd. But for the Super Sporting Class, the young gun Inigo Anton left everyone else in the dust as he scored a lights-to-flag victory in Race 9 ahead of Red Diwa and John Dizon.
After the dust and drizzle settled, all that's left is the culmination night where Toyota Motor Philippines will announce the overall winners for each category and officially wrap up the 2022 TGR Vios Cup season. According to TMP, this will be held sometime in December.
The 2022 Toyota Gazoo Racing Vios Cup is organized in cooperation with Bridgestone, Petron, Brembo, Denso, OMP, Tuason Racing, AVT, 3M, Rota, My Toyota Wallet, and Kinto One.
