hi there guys!

i need your opinions on what might be wrong with my car engine (89 Corolla 16 valve) 'coz there's this sound like tiktik...tiktik...tiktik that goes with the normal sound even if the engine has been running already for quite some time. my cousin said that 'kailangang ipa-tope' but the problem daw is that there are no adjustments na pwedeng gawin. the only remedy daw is ipa-machine shop, but it really sounds scary doing so.

what do you think? any service shop you know where i can have a check-up?

I'm not sure kung self-adjusting na ang mga valve tappets ng 4a-f. Pero kung papa-machine shop mo at gagastos ka ng mahal, might as well palit ka na lang ng makina.

baka shim type sya kaya non-adjustable. you may have to get new parts pa:(

If they are shim type (same as 92-97 models) then the formula on how to calculate the correct thickness for a replacement shim using a micrometer goes like this:

N = T + (A - V)

where:

T = thickness
A = valve clearance measured
N = thickness of the new shim
V = desired valve clearance

the shims are available in 17 sizes in increments of 0.0020 inch (0.050mm), range in size from 0.0984 inch(2.500mm) to 0.1299inch (3.300mm).

it is often possible to simply move a shim that has to come out anyway to another valve lifter requiring a shim of that particular size, thereby reducing the number of new shims that must be purchased.

VALVE ADJUSTING SHIM TABLE:

SHIM #:      Thickness(mm)
1.               2.55
2.               2.60
3.               2.65
4.               2.70
5.               2.75
6.               2.80
7.               2.85
8.               2.90
9.               2.95
10.             3.00
11.             3.05
12.             3.10
13.             3.15
14.             3.20
15.             3.25
16.             3.30

Valve Clearance Specs (Engine Cold):

Intake: 0.006 to 0.010 inch
Exhaust: 0.010 to 0.014 inch

Spark Plug Gap:

0.043 inch

peeps tanong ko na din since HLAs din naman pinag-uusapan. yung engine ko kasi every start (cold start or kahit warm na yung engine before starting) may tik tik sound. medyo malakas sa umpisa then dahan dahan humihina tapos pag tumatakbo na hanggang mag-park wala na yung tik tik sound, smooth na uli.  ba't kaya tunog tappets every start? sira na kaya to or possible kaya na mahina na yung oil pump kaya di umaakyat agad yung oil sa HLAs kaya tumutunog pag start? nawawala naman ilaw sa oil pressure indicator pagka-start. or is it the oil I use? btw i use shell semi-synthetic. i would appreciate your expert inputs on this matter.  thanks! ;D
