Depends on you, what you want.  They are very similar in objective and function that, for me, it doesn't matter what you choose.  It's just a matter of price and the condition of the car, if you buy a used car.

Performance-wise, most magazines show the EVO having a light advantage but in the real world, that difference is not enough to decide a race each and every time.  It's still up to the driver.

If you're going to leave it stock, EVO 7 is the best-buy and is great as-is because of the AYC system.   i think it's only about P1.5M na or lower?  Turns an average-driver into a very fast track driver if you drive it at up to 8/10's.  But drive it at 9/10ths or more and it will teach you a lesson if you're not skilled enough!

The US EVO 8 doesn't have the AYC but it's better to modify if you decide you need more power because the driveline is simpler and can take more power without breaking down.  Just make sure you replace the clutch if you take it to the track.  New ones here are over P2.3M I heard.

If you have the money, then EVo 9 MR is obviously your best bet.  Is it like P3.5M, if it's out na?

The latest Sti's, according to the BMI DVD's, were developed on the Nurburgring and have improved hardware.  Isn't the price the same as the EVO 8 or maybe more?

Pros?  Class A ka agad sa RWYB!  If not, nakakahiya ka!  hehe.  Fastest car in the rain!  Gets a lot of attention.

Cons?  Heavy, expensive to repair and/or maintain, not that reliable, especially if you track it.  Uses up expensive tires right away.  Smaller gas tank than a Honda Civic and with a turbo engine, you'll have to carry an extra gas tank to BRC for trackday!  Gets a lot of attention.  ;D

There is no dishonor in losing the race. There is

speedyfix

heard from a couple of owners that the subaru is more "comfy" to use as a daily driver.

ask RAY or rotawheels tho... they should be able to give feedback on the subaru. hesperus should be able to tell you about the evo.

I would prefer a Subaru STI with the 2.5 liter engine, more torque available down low in the power band. Whichever you choose, pasakay ha? ;D

As speedy said, the STI is a more comfortable daily driver.

So now, I'll try to give you a unbiased opinion. This is based on the various customer car EVO 8s I have tried in the States as compared to my STI

First of all, whatever you choose. Pareho good cars yan.

The EVO will handle better than the STI on the track. It is a no nonsense track day car with very little compromise. Obviously, they are very fast as well with capacity to even go faster with minor bolt-ons.

The STI is more tuned for daily driving, sacrficing a little handling prowess for a more civilized driving experience. Opt for the 2.5 US model and you will get mountains of torque na sobrang nakaka-addict. Add some "pink" springs to improve the handling nalang.

So the short answer is, if you are looking for an ultimate, no holds barred trackday machine and can live with the slight harshness, go EVO. If you are willing to trade a little handling for civilty, go STI. When I got the STI, I said to myself. I probably do not have the skill to fully exploit the EVOs maximum handling capability so I went for the more comfortable STI. Oh and when I say comfortable, I mean relative to the EVO. Of course, it is still not a Mercedes ha

No problems whatsoever.

The GM Philippines imported Subaru WRX was the 227 hp model. There where two revisions they imported, the first batch was GDA-A with a slightly weaker engine (less than 227) and non automatic A/C, the second batch was the GDA-B with the full fledged 227hp motor similar to the US WRX and can be distinguished by the fully automatic climate controls (non-digital). I sold my 2003 modle second batch unit with full STI exterior (grill, fog covers, badges, lip, instrument panel) for around 1.6M late last year. Both of these types were the bug eye model. Expect to pay 1.4 to 1.5 now for a low mileage unit

GM then imported another batch of WRXs with the revision C front end (GDA-C) and sold it for 1.9M brand new. STill 227hp but with the facelifted front end. There may be some units still availabe in GM Autoworld

Now, lets go to the STI. Basically all  original LHD STIs in the Philippines were USDM model 2004 and 2005 STIs. I do not know of any EDM (european) STIs in the Philippines. These are all personal imports and they all have the for the US only 2.5 liter 300 hp/300 lbs-ft. engine. Price range for these type is around 2.4 to 2.7M.
The 2005 models came with the extended rear flare, 5x114.3 wheels, all aluminum rear suspension and revised dashboard.

Now, the Cebu units which were converted to LHD. All are from Japan and use the 280hp, 2.0 liter engine. Price range for this model is around 1.6 to 1.8M. But as I said in a previous post somehwere in AI. I am very wary of converted Subarus cause I have seen a US car disassembled in the States. It was a show car that the owner converted from LHD to RHD and I saw the very many unique pieces that a LHD car has specially yung mga brake and clutch booster linkages. Di ito parang Civic or Evo na medyo straight forward ang brake and clutch pedal box

I have the same sentiments.  :)

R-A-Y

I got nothing more to contribute. Sir Rota pretty much said everything.

For me, the deciding point of getting either of the two was its capability to be driven on a daily basis. Not that I do, but you know it would make a big difference on those few times that you drive it around Metro Manila traffic.

And yes, I am not aspiring to go on massive attack mode on tracks, but rather to enjoy the car with the limited capabilities of the machine and the driver ;D

Oh, and the STi looks sweet too ;D

The only con that I see is that I tend to use up a lot more gas than usual (Probably caused by an involuntary motion to step the gas more than the usual) ;D

thx for all the useful info sir RAY !  :)

btw yung 227hp na engine is it a 2.5 liter na detuned or its a 2.0 kaya siya mas mahina than the sti?

The 227hp model that was oficially imported was a 2.0L (EJ20-5)

JDM STI is a 2.0L 280 hp (EJ20-7)

USDM STI is 300hp 2.5L (EJ25-7)

i was faced with the same question last year. And i got the same response from most people here. Sir hesperus was very helpful and gave me the same inputs that sir rota wheels wrx, i was even considering his wrx at that time...

but ultimately the deciding factor for me was that the evo7 had a significant advantage over the sti version in terms of performance, and even more on the wrx non-sti versions. I don't plan to use the car everyday, and plan to build it as a weekend trackday car. so in that terms the evo has more parts available readily.

Comfort really goes to the subaru and with the sti you are less inclined to modify it radically, most basic bolt-on will make you happy. But having it stock is definitely a blast to drive even on traffic.

Trust me the evo is kinda heavy and boring to drive in daily edsa slow moving traffic, it's pain to drive in slow traffic, you'll only be grinning when you're driving it at around 160kph to 240kph. But trust me, you'll get to grin bigger and faster than the subaru in those terms.

Reliability about the same, if you keep them stock, the reason most evos breakdown easily is because of the modifications done to it.
