Handbrake on CRV AT

Hello friends,

This is regarding the CRV 4x2 AT:

My brother says that Honda people have told him not to engage the Handbrake while the transmission is at "P", he says he was told about "sticking brakes" or something to that effect, and that the Handbrakes should only be engaged when the tansmission is at "Neutral".   Is this true?  I am not really very fond of A/T vehicles and I have not really heard of this before.

One more thing, once you start the vehicle, the "O/D is off" light is off, which means the O/D is already engaged (Default I guess is O/D on).  I usually push the button to switch it off while driving around.  Is there any adverse effect with this practice of mine? - switching the overdrive off.

Thanks!

OTEP

Just keep the overdrive on.  Otherwise your A/T cannot shift into 4th (overdrive) gear when it needs to.  It's ok if you push it on and off as long as you are running below the engagement speed of the O/D (I do not know what speed the CR-V shifts into 4th).  Have mercy on your tranny and keep it on.  Even in a manual transmission you can reach 4th gear in city driving, right?  It's default position is on for a reason.  Not just because some Honda engineer wanted it to be that way.

Those Honda people he talked to are full of shit.  Using the "P" position of an A/T to hold the vehicle still is a great way of destroying or getting the A/T stuck up.  Sticking brakes will occur only if you engaged the handbrakes after the brakes have been immersed in water (i.e. flooded road).  You should even engage the hand brake prior to shifting into "P" so that the vehicle will not move.  That small movement can cause trannys to get stuck.

Otep, good of you to clear those issues up. Sometimes, I'm stunned by the silliness of the misinformation that goes out there. By the "Honda people" ? Sheesh.

Dudes,

Sa Honda Pasig, that's where we got the CRV kasi, and they brought the vehicle in for the first 1,000 check up some weeks ago.  That was when my brother got this "advice" from a "honda person".

Hi Glock!

Non-sense yung sinabi nung "Honda Guy" about the hanbrake thing. All of our vehicles (except my RAV4) are A/T, and we usually put on the hand or foot brake even if the gearstick is engaged in the Park position. I've experienced the "Sticking Brake" thing before on my F-150, but that was because I had it car washed (where the cleaners also spray water on the inner wheel area) and didn't use it for a week. When I used it again, no problems occured.

The 4th or OD gear on a 4sp auto trans is equivalent to the 5th gear of a typical manual transmission.  Direct drive on a 4sp auto is typically the 3rd gear while on a 5sp manual, it's 4th.

Keep the O/D button "on" for most situations but it's ok to turn it "off" on mountain passes, towing and on rough roads to provide more control...  Turning the O/D "off" lessens gear hunting (between 3rd and 4th) and allows for more engine braking thus lessening the need to ride the brakes while descending.

Otep's suggestion regarding Parking Brake use is correct...
