If you were to choose, which would you pick?

530i, although the 530d's numbers look very good on paper in terms of torque and fuel efficiency, I really question the diesel quality being sold by our gas stations. Diesel quality sold here and in Europe are very very different in terms of sulfur and other toxic contents which may prove detrimental to the BMW diesel engine.

530D. gotta be practical nowadays. BMW says diesel fuel here is fine with their engines. if they say so, then fine. if the engine gets damaged by fuel, blame it on them telling us it's okay.

Negligible difference in standing start acceleration and top speed but the 530d will leave the 530i for dead in real world on-gear acceleration.  500 Nm of torque at just 2000 rpm rules ;).  11 km /l of cheap diesel versus 7 km/l of expensive gasoline, sa 530d na ako ;).

We can dream can't we?

Wont there a be a problem with the 530d in long terms as we all know its diesel engines will emitt the back smoke and wont the maintenance be more costly?

i'd go for the 530i too...sanayan lang siguro with cars being filled up with gas rather than diesel

diesel for me. After that test drive i had i cant imagine driving the gas. The torque is amazing! This sept or oct i think they will be upgrading the diesel engine again with better turbos upping the hp from 218 to somewhere around 250-280 with huge torque too.

ok na yan for everyday use. :)

Have you tried driving a diesel with common rail EFI?  (Like the Isuzu Trooper).  First thing you'll notice is how cleanly it burns the fuel.  Stand in the back and get a whiff of the exhaust and it doesn't smell like diesel at all.  It smells clean.  And it doesn't ever emit smoke.

The usual diesel racket and vibration are gone too. Even with the 1st generation common rail EFI 530d, people swore they couldn't tell it was a diesel by the sound or vibration alone.  What they do notice is the huge and instantaneous torque available as soon as you press on the accelerator. The new 530d's engine is a 2nd generation common rail EFI already so its even better.  Small wonder then that it outsells the 530i in Germany.

I have to say though, there was a slight shudder when shutting the 530id engine when i drove it.

Its noticeable mostly when the doors are open. Im sure this will even be less when the newer engine comes out.

By then it will be called the 535id but will retain the 3 liter displacement.

Can you describe how 500 Newton-meters feels like?  That is torque worthy of a supercar.  Iwan lahat ang katabi mo sa traffic?

I myself had a lengthy test drive of the 530d. We took it from Fort Bonifacio Global City to Batangas. The car is something you wouldn't expect since we aren't used to really fast diesel engine cars.

The feeling of the torque feels very smooth, but the push is there. No sudden push you against the seat feeling though since this is a luxury sedan. Engine response is very good all throughout the rev range.

The question lies however in the long run. Will it the engine be able to last long with our bad diesel fuel here? BMW was confident to say that if it doesn't then they wouldn't be bringing it in here.

I wonder what Petron or Shell has to say about that.  Any oil company execs on board?  I thought low sulfur na ang diesel natin.

Kahit naman low sulfur, our diesel is still below par from what they have in Europe because of the price factor. The local market simply can't afford expensive diesel fuel just yet.

I'm for practicality, and with a common-rail efi diesel engine for a luxury sedan, you do quite get the best of both worlds. Luxury, comfort and power, with the practicality of a diesel engine to boot ;D 530d for me :)

Although, I, too, have reservations with the fuel quality we have here. Our Gen 3 Pajero sometimes gets its injectors really clogged  :-[
