That size is barely a 31 inch tire so it's going to cause you some problems.  maybe in a n emergency, you could but I wouldnt designate that as my permanent spare.

what tire size is advisable?
the 35 inch are heavy in the spare tire carrier/door and are costly too.

C'mon man! You have / bought 4 pcs of size 35 tires and then you're complaining for a price of a spare tire. That spare tire will get you out of tight situation whether you're in off roading or out on a country side. That spare tire would be very cheap.... example in the middle of a night in a remote dusty road with your family ... you have a damaged tire..... you will say... thanks God I have this spare tire.

I dont know what vehicle this is going on but i would think there are ways of mou nting a large spare without straining the rear door.  Perhaps a tire carrier can help.

I understand that these tires are costly but  you do have to equip yourself with the appropriate tire.  If you really want to save money, you can use a slightly smaller and narrower tire but not a 31 inch tire. Perhaps you can measure out those 7.50 x 16's.  If I'm not mistaken they spec out at about 33 inches.  Those are relatively inexpensive. About 3,500 or even less.  Alternatively, you can go search some tire dealers that sell 2nd hand tires and get a used but useable 35 inch tire.  This will be even less expensive and will work when you need it in those rare moments you get a flat tire.  You can also decide to stock about 2 cans of fix-a-flat and hope that the flat you get is the punctured type and not the slashed sidewall or surface.  There are a lot of ways to go about solving your predicament.  The decision and assessment of the situation will rest in your hands. Good luck.

7.50X16s are 32" in diameter.

Left and right tires must be of the same size if your vehicle has a locker.  You'll break your locker if you run uneven tire sizes on that particular axle.  If you have fully-open diffs, you may limp home with a smaller spare.

Fix-a-Flats are great.  I've used 2 cans instead of changing a tire on the trail.

When you began this thread, you said 235/80R16....

Anyway, most 235/85R16s are also listed as 32" in diameter.  The 7.50X16 is just narrower.

255/85R16s are listed as 33s".

Remember, most tire manufacturers measure diameter using a specific rim width, the tire inflated to max sidewall or max load psi and off the vehicle.

Visit your tire manufacturer's website.  Goodyear, Cooper, Michelin and Mickey Thompson list tire diameters for specific sizes and the rim width they are measured at.
