hi audio peeps! hpe u can help me out   ;) m thinking of getting a single JL w3v2 sub and im thinking if i should get it ported or sealed lang. I know that getting it ported will make it louder but my concern is if the quality of bass will be affected. my questions are

1) titigas ba yung bass pag ported vs. sealed

2) mas "gagapang" ba yung sound pag ported or sealed

3) What other performance characteristics will be different if a box is sealed vs ported.

my main goal is to get the most out of the sub, if it can go louder (by being ported) but without affecting sound quality then it wouldn't be a bad idea to get it ported hehe   ;)  although i'd like the bass to be clean and "malambot ang bayo"

ur opinion and advice would be of great help, thanks!

Pag ported ang box usually lumalambot at gumagapang yun bass.

Try to audition Andrew's set-up. He uses a w3v2 sub in a ported enclosure.

ported enclosure are more efficient than sealed enclosures. they give more output for the same power input compared to a seal enclosure but the tradeoff is less than ideal acoustic performance when you hit the notes lower than the port tuning and enclosure sizes are bigger compared to that of a sealed enclosure.

vinn111,

kewlryds is right and added to what he said,

When using a ported box, the sound is "malabot" and "gumagapang". The difference between the a sealed and poted box is:
  First the size of the box will differ, the ported will have a bigger box;
Secondly the sound of a ported box will not be as accurate as the sealed one, the hard kicks that a sealed enclosure produces will not be clearly heard by a ported box. When listening carefully, a ported box has a slower response to the beats (frequency response), medyo lag kungbaga. Sealed enclosure can adopt to conditions of the sounds when installed and placed on a proper enclosure.

The factor to have an efficient sub, IMHO, that produces your type of sound would really depend on you, because you want to hear what you'd like and not ours... Aside from proper installtion proper volume for the box, the rest is for your ears to hear... So everything boils down to your preference..  :D

Hope this helps!!!

God Bless!!!

ummm....that's basically what i said. 8)

both enclosure designs can actually be 'malambot' and 'gumagapang'. it' all a matter of tuning the enclosure. sealed enclosures are easier to tune compared to ported ones plus you have more room for mistakes in terms of enclosure volume compared to a ported one which is very sensitive to enclosure volume and port size.

when i mentioned efficiency, i was talking about enclosure designs, not speakers. in a seal enclosure the air inside is acoustic energy wasted but is supports the speaker's cone in such a way that it keeps it's movement linear even under high volumes and extreme excursions. in a ported enclosure, it is more efficient due to the fact that the air inside the enclosure is also used to produce additional acoustical output to compliment the speaker cone's through the use of a port. but all good thing come with a trade-off. although you have more acoustical output in a ported enclosure compared to that of a sealed one for the same power input, it is limited up to what frequency you tune the ported enclosure. once you play a note lower than what the port is tuned to, sound quality deteriorates but anything above it will be as clear and detailed as that of a sealed enclosure with a little more output.

Well said jUERGèN and kewlryds. 8)

thanks guys for ur replies! its really been a big help, im not very familiar with the technical aspects of car audio hehe  ;)

regarding the tuning, is there a cut-off for the frequency that you can tune a ported sub? in that case then i should it as low as possible?   :o

KeWlRyDs

the only limitation you have for the tuning frequency of the port is port size. it comes to a point where the port is too big or too long to be practical. keep in mind though that the length of the port can extend to the outside of the enclosure if it is too long to fit inside already.

jUERGeN

If you're getting the JL 12w3v2, i suggest you go for the sealed inclosure... I've heard of it and it has both gapang and kicks when needed...  :D

depende talaga sa subs kung designed sya for ported or sealed. but kung SPL gusto mo, imo, mas ok ung ported kasi mas gumagapang. pag SQ nman, magsealed ka, buo ung tunog pero di masyado umaabot sa labas unlike the subs in a ported enclosure... but like what i saind, it still depends on the design of the sub ur goin 2 buy... more hP! ;D
