Labor Secretary Patricia Santo Tomas broke the big news Saturday night that hostage victim Angelo de la Cruz was finally freed by his Iraqi captors, just hours before his imminent execution.

Santo Tomas says she got the information from no less than President Arroyo, who also personally revealed the good news to Arsenia, wife of Angelo, by calling her on the phone.

ABS-CBN's Middle East News Bureau has also confirmed that de la Cruz has been released.

THANK GOD...  :)

sorry to say but they are celebrating too early. just now nabasa ko sa news that the iraqi hostage takers are mad for the pre-mature announcement of the said release.

they are demanding a july 20 pullout. unang agreement kasi on aug20 and RP promised to pull out at the said date kaya pumayag 'daw' yun iraqis na pakawalan si delacruz.

but rumors are false. they want a july20 pullout. this time, gloria cannot use ambiguity as a tactic for the release. she has to decide. stick with the US and finish the stay til aug20 or the life of angelo. time is ticking.

We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.

Talk about throwing the shit into the fan.

I'm sorry, but I do not agree with what the government did. I believe that, yes there is and should always be a diplomatic approach to all terrorist confrontations, but this does not mean complying with their demands. You are basically provoking them to continue what they are doing since they feel that they can get away with it.

Another thing: GMA wanted to support the coaltion forces by sending troops and aide for the war effort. I believe that when you do so, you accept all consequences that come with it, including loss of life of the people or anyone for that matter sent there. It's almost like saying that she would rather side with the terrorists since she complied to their demands. I believe that this is one of the things that the government and the Filipino people must deal with.

Our international relations relies heavily on being united in our cause. Suddenly complying with terrorist demands is a sign of breaking our pact to these nations. Now, more than ever, they will lose confidence at the way our country deals with crises.

Thus, If she'll not do those things our everloving demonstrators/militants/rallyist will critizing again Pres. Arroyo. They'll say that they are not protecting their citizens and she is a puppet of the U.S Gov't and whatsover. I realized now that working as a President is a difficult job you must think of all consequences when making decision.

This situation as they say is hitting two birds at the same time. ::)

You're right. Talk about having a tough job huh? Not only dooes she need to manage the international relations and ideas but also the more personal and idealistic aspect of every Filipino.

Question: How did the American and Korean government deal with the beheadings of their fellow countrymen? I never heard much from it after they were executed. ???

US and South Korea stay committed, even Bulgaria didn't cave in to the terrorists.

IMHO Arroyo shouldn't have given in. But I guess she values local politics and popularity more than she does international relations. Doing this would ensure that the Filipino people would be happy, and these are the people that she is courting.

If it were up to me I definitely would have stayed through till the end, even at the cost of dela Cruz's life. But what's done is done, either way you look at it, our country loses. If she had not given in, one Filipino would have died unecessarily, but if she had given in then our reputation with the international community would be more tainted than ever. We will now become known as a nation of pussies hehehe
In a world of compromise, some don't.

One thing siguro is kaka-tapos lang ng elections and she was given a fresh mandates, so she would not be willing to risk taking the heat by refusing to pullout the troops.  This situation is definitely a double-edged sword.
