Damn... Was anyone able to watch it? last 20mins lang naabutan ko.

Seismic Seconds: The Death of Ayrton Senna

Ayrton Senna was three times world-champion, winner of 41 Grand Prix and considered to be the greatest motor racing driver of his generation. But in 1994, for no apparent reason, his car slammed into a concrete wall at 192 mph during the San Marino Grand Prix. Millions of people witnessed his death yet the tragedy is still unresolved. Recently the Williams-Renault team released secret telemetry recordings from Senna's car and this year a third trial for his manslaughter was announced. Watch Senna's final seconds and find out what caused this catastrophic event.

Long live Rock and Roll.

I saw this documentary already.  Basically, it refutes the driver error and broken steering column theories but rather pins the blame on the 'bottoming' of the car's underpan that momentarily cut-off airflow to the rear diffusers, resulting in sudden loss of downforce.

I think this theory is very plausible because 1994 was the year FIA banned active suspensions but the cars were still using 1993-spec ground clearance.  Active suspension among other advantages, allowed the 1993 F1 cars to ride very low without bottoming.

The bumps approaching the ultra-high speed Tamburello left hander (the fatal corner), which is very similar to Suzuka's 130R but with a concrete retaining wall instead of a runoff area, caused the car to bottom out.

Di pwede walang wall kasi may creek dun sa kabila.  The solution they implemented after the accident was put a chicane.

Tamburello was one of the most spectacular corners in F1.  It connected 2 straights.  If a driver had balls of steel (like Nigel Mansell), he could draft a car thru Tamburello and overtake on the following straight.

Yun nga lang talagang dangerous.  I remember Michele Alboreto's Ferrari crashing there with Michele barely escaping as the car burst into flames.

Malas talaga.

Yeah... sad to say, malas lang nga talaga. I guess it was really his time.

just saw the program again. i was just wondering why it only happened to sennas car? lahat naman bagsak ang ride saka malamig tires? or maybe he was taking the curve faster than the others for it to bottom out...

Siya yata leading sa race kaya ganun? Siya yung malas na pagdating sa corner na yun malamig pa ang gulong.  :'(

Apologies to Senna fans (I was one too) but I honestly felt then that Senna crashed because he was trying too hard.  Why?

The previous year (1993), Williams-Renault dominated (ala Ferrari 2002 and 2004) with Nigel Mansell winning 10 out of 16 (or thereabouts) races.  1993 also saw Senna at his peak form - winning an amazing 3 races in an badly outclassed Mclaren-Ford.

So when Senna jumped ship to Williams in 1994, it was obvious to everyone that the championships were over - Senna, the best driver in the best car, will win easily. But the first 2 races of 1994 were won by the new sensation - Michael Shumacher in a lowly Benetton-Ford, with Senna retiring from mistakes at both races.

So now comes the 3rd race - Imola.  Obviously Senna was under pressure to win.  If you knew Senna, you'd know about his enormous personal pride, a champion's ego if you will.  He wanted to put this young upstart in his proper place.  Guess who was behind him in hot pursuit when he crashed?  It was Schumi.

impulse_101

si schumi nga yung nasa likod. :) during those times hindi pa ko f1 fan pero i saw it on the news.

ang lupet ni senna kahit last curve niya yun. according to the black box, nung nag bottom out yung car naka react si senna by braking really hard. and it took him .10 of a second! that was how quick his reaction was. too bad he was going to fast to stop. na sense niya agad...

luwe

hindi lang brake hard. kasabay pa ng pag counter steer! sayang lang kulang talaga yung road.  :'(
