just had my evaporator replaced with an OEM, aircon tech told me that achieving 18deg C [measured using a thermometer inserted in the vent] should be fine.

how true? feeling ko kasi it must be lower pa.  ::)

My car can get as low as 5 degrees centigrade when cruising.

^yup! a good a/c can easily acheive 5-6 degrees celsius even while idling. under a shade of course.

have it checked again. 18 deg from a vent is not cold.

macbook_pro

5 to 6 degrees cabin temperature or the air from the vent?

no way... isn't that too cold? your thermostat would have stopped your compressor at some point in 10deg -more or less

yeah, i thought so too. 18deg is actually cold, but not cold enough to quickly do the entire cabin. i'll hav it checked by somebody else.

btw, 18deg was measured from the vent at noon time 1pm with the sun painfully above the car.

No it's not too cold. Our other cars are even colder. This is measured at the aircon vent and not cabin temperature.

usually temp is measured at the vents using dial or digital thermometers..(any will do.. plus or minus 1 to 2 degrees lang and diff..) but this is done usually at the lowest setting of the blower and at maximum setting of thermostat to the coldest setting..

for single unit aircon(r-134a or R-12 and depending on the model) temp should be at least 10 degrees or lower..  even under the sun it should at least be 10 degrees.. anything above that should be re checked..  :) however for extreme hot weather conditions here merong exemption hehe..

thanks for ur replies. i opend my glove compartment and checkd the evap. found out that the primary thermostat has been set to "middle" only and not fully open. now it's a lot colder but i haven't checkd it with a thermometer. will do it tonight and will let you guys know.

btw, i have a primary thermostat becoz the previous owner must have replaced it with this adjustable one. so in effect, i hav two switches for the thermostat, the one directly connected to the evap and the one in the dash.
