I think they're bringing in the wrong trim! The RS model is sold like sans comforts and niceties because they're probably going to be stripped out anyways. Perhaps the standard US model (Evo IX GT in Japan) would have been more appropriate.

Yes, I agree!  But that's too much to hope for.  Probably Mitsu Phils is so poor they have no choice but to accept what they are given.   ;)

from what i remember, the 5spd tranny is still more durable.  it was the one used-- and i believe still used-- by group N rally teams.  mitsu introduced the 6spd largely because the STI already had it, and for marketing purposes, lugi ang evo if they stuck with the 5spd.

the RS-- which as people have pointed out, is the model designed to be stripped for race use-- comes with the 5spd, because its better suited to rallying.  and many people are going to remove it and replace it with a proper race tranny anyway (sequential and or crashbox).

Yes, I tend to agree the 5-speed is better for track use like BRC.  Looks like the 6-speed is merely an overdrive tranny when it comes to the gearing of 5 and 6-speed in the Evo.  You would have to change the ratios to take advantage of the 6-speed.  But it would be tiring to shift so often with a close-ration naman.

With the STi (6 speed), it's so closely geared, I would be shifting up to 5th at BRC all the time.  I found this surprising as my little Type R wouldn't ever need 5th gear at the track.

hmm maybe the bottomline here is will you purchase your evo ix sa mitsubishi dealership or somwhere else? (greymarket, contacts from importing, etc.)

6spd in the evo is not overdrive.  the top speed of the 6pd is the same as the 5spd.  so the 6spd just allows you to have closer ratios.

not really proper to compare with the 5spd in your type-r.  remember that your car revs to almost 9k.  the evo only revs to around 7.6k.  in a super high revving car, you can stay in-gear longer.  whereas in a relatively low revving turbo car, you would be short shifting more often.  especially in the evo, whose (stock) power characteristics mean that you should actually be shifting up just past 6k RPM, to take advantage of the slug of torque in the mid range.

now if you had an AMS tuned evo... that would be different.  the power on those things just keeps going up and up and up... they've built evo's that rev to 10k RPM...

then again, we're talking over 600whp... different beast entirely  ;D

EVO IX gear ratios

Gear    RS           MR
1         2.785       2.909
2         1.950       1.944
3         1.444       1.434
4         1.096       1.100
5         0.761       0.868
6           -             0.693
Final   4.529       4.583
-------------------------------

Doesn't 2nd thru 4th look identical?  The 6 speed just has a lower 1st gear and overdrive 6th.

yup, that's what i mean...

and since the car's top speed remains virtually identical despite the extra ratio, then the extra cog means you get a bit more in-gear thrust-- though you will be "rowing" more often  ;D

Speaking of gear ratios.

Mr. GTR, Did you go ahead and change the final drive of your EK9? I remember when I had my EK9, I put the ATS 4.929 final drive and it would hit 8K RPM in 5th before braking for the hairpin in the old Subic layout. In the infield though, that gearing was such a gem. The car would just pull out of the tight corners because the motor was always on the cam

Please correct me I am wrong.

The IX RS we have here is not the US model but the Euro-spec model. May diffusers and RS, JDM headlights and tailights with amber signal lights. Interior is stripped. The MR is the US model, and I believe that it is only the US that has a IX MR, coz the rest got trims of GSR, GT and RS. Ewan ko lang but hindi ba mga US Evos are restricted in terms of power?

In my opinion, if you want am Evo that you can take to the track, RS and kunin mo. but if u want comfort and yet still got that spunk, edi mag MR ka.

I just dont know though if the MR will keep up with the RS when they are placed on the track.

Hesperus: ano ang redline ng dating Evo ng Autoplus? diba it had more than 600whp?

bakit RS yng kinuha ng uncle mo instead of MR? is he going to track it? or dahil nadismaya lang sya treatment sa kanya sa honda alabang?  ::)

pwede bang magpaampon sa uncle mo? joke!

streetillegal

priority talaga niya ay evo 9 RS. yun tita (wifey niya) ko lang ay ang kumokontra kaya naisip ren niya ang dalawng oto as an option B. hindi lang evo 9 RS ang inorder sa mitsu, pero he got a Lancer GLX as a grad gift sa anak niya from the same guy who entertained him. dapat city vtec and evo 9, pero na turn-off lang siya talaga sa mga taga honda. kaya lancer yun kinuha niya nalang.

anyway, itatrack niya at pakakargahan niya ren. gusto niyo ng RS coz he likes evos na raw and brute, tulad ng mas hardcore na Evo 5 RS.

Agent J

at least yng rs ngayon eh hindi na semi-mags like the evo5 rs dati.. pero mas astig parin ang evo5 for me..  :)

streetillegal

Evo 5 pa ren sa akin! mas hardcore talaga! parang kakainin kang buhay

USDM RS = JDM RS (mechanically anyways, ewan na lang sa itsura)
USDM IX = JDM GT (like the RS, but with comforts)
USDM MR = JDM GSR (but without the AYC)

Labas na pala the "real" JDM Evo IX MR. just got the vid last week. The JDM models are now the EVO IX MR RS, EVO IX MR GSR (not sure yet if they have an MR GT).

The rear bumper should give away if the car is a US or EU/JDM model. The US models have that big bumper with an ugly curve, the JDM and EU models are nicer and cleaner looking. US model also has a crashbar behind the bumper.
