same way you know in a manual... you're in gear, the engine is revving but you're not going anywhere.

You are pressing on the gas, the revs go up, but you are not going forward.

Or you are pressing on the gas on your automatic, the revs go up without you going forward, then suddenly your transmission locks on then you go forward with a sudden jolt.
